In their highest boughs the world rustles, their roots rest in infinity; but they do not lose themselves there, they struggle with all the force of their lives for one thing only: to fulfill themselves according to their own laws, to build up their own form, to represent themselves. Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree.
Trees have captured the human imagination since the beginning of time. Their strength, deeply rooted in the Earth, is an inspiration. Their trunk and branches are a wonder of nature because they stand sturdy and impenetrable most of the time, yet they can flex and sway with the wind when needed.
We are all born with raw instincts that our whole personality grows around later. When we’re a toddler, we develop a new ring around our emotions. You no longer cry for everything, you cry because you’re upset. You get happy, jealous, angry, disgusted, or scared, and sometimes all of these within the same day.
Eventually, that one is covered by the ring of intelligence, and you learn to contain your emotions when they aren’t welcome. Later intelligence is coated with some life experience that grants you the ability to understand both other people’s behavior and your own; to face the storms of life.
And then someone comes along who strikes you so deep that the axe stops only inches from your heart, and strips you of those lovingly constructed rings down to your soul, so all you’re left with is the vulnerable side of you. The one who doesn’t know logic and reason yet, who has no clue why people do what they do.
We must stay strong through all the adversaries we face. Our trust in others will be questioned. Our faith in humanity will be altered. Our belief in the goodness of others will be shaken. Through it all, remain humble and allow God to guide you through the journey.
