Exercise partners provide a powerful combination of support, accountability, motivation and, in some cases, healthy competition. They can play the role of teammate, co-coach and cheerleader — all while working out.
Finding the right workout partner (someone you care about and click with) dramatically increases your chances of success. A buddy can motivate you to do one more set, continue when you feel like you have just had enough and want to give up, or when you are feeling hopeless.
The holiday weekend is here, it’s the unofficial start to summer. But my grind doesn’t stop. It’s time to start wearing bathing suits, and cute revealing clothing. Varying tempo and intent are easy ways to train for different adaptations while using the same exercise. Slow repetitions (1st rep) help develop motor control and proprioceptive awareness of body position in space. Isometric holds (2nd rep) develop specific joint angle strength, and high velocity maximum intent reps (3rd rep) improve stability and rate of force development (RFD). If you’re limited on equipment, changing tempo and intent are great ways to make a movement more challenging or induce a different kind of stimulus with a constant load.
