LET THERE BE LIGHT! It worked! For once something worked on the first try for this cosplay. With some pearly worbla & purple fairy lights (plus several hours and a lot of patience) I was able to achieve the glowing crystal look I wanted for Mercy’s staff. Swipe for reference.
I've received a lot of question across various platforms about how I made these bracers. So here's a little rundown. I hope it's helpful!
The base was made with 1 layer of 2mm Eva craft foam and 1 layer of pearly worbla with the edges folded over. I then carved each spike out of pink insulation foam, and glued them to the base with hot glue. Later they all got individually covered in scraps of worblas pearly art. The irregular shapes of the spikes presented some challenges for getting even coverage, but with some creating cutting and seam blending, I got there.
After the spikes were covered, I re-heated them one at a time and used a clay vcarving tool to add grooves and lines into the spikes for that organic texture.
I then heated up scraps of the same pearly worbla into a putty to mush into empty spaces and create the textured transition between spikes and scales. I used a clay sculpting tool to mush it into the cracks and blend the spikes into the base and create that grooves texture.
The scale pattern was then drawn on with a pen for guides, and burned into the worbla with a wood burner. I sanded the whole base down with a dremel to get rid of some of the sharp edges the wood burner left. Then it's prime, paint, and matte clear coat!

Trying out many different techniques for detail work on Loki's armor ! With ... mixed results :
For the "engraved" details I tried using a hot woodburning tool on cold worbla, and using a cold sculpting tool on hot worbla. The second method worked a lot better to get a smooth line without the little "lips" created around each line by the woodburner method (as you can see on the botton piece). This is still far from perfect but I think I'm going to go with that and practice !
The raised details gave me a LOT more trouble ... I have seen so many people re-heat, combine and shape worbla leftovers with no difficulties, but with me it just wouldn't work, the worbla kept on getting cracks and breaking apart (as you can see on the top border) ... so I tried cutting it in stripes instead for the linear raised details. If anyone has any advice I would love to hear it ! Am I heating it enough ? Too much ?
I am VERY happy with the patinating wax however ! The coverage and aspect are awesome over a black base, and although it is difficult to get just right on picture, the color is really nice !

First pauldron. I am liking this worbla a lot!
And with that belt, Cersei is FINISHED! I have been powering through the past week to finish the second lion, sew it on, hand hem the entire dress, make the worbla belt plates, and learn and do the chain mail for the belt! I’ve been working at it pretty hard, and I am so pleased with the result. It took approximately 230 hours for the entire thing. Started it in January and worked on it all throughout my last semester of school! And now as I transition between jobs and take time for myself, I’ll have this off of my mind, completed! And I really do love it! There are a few things that I would have liked to do differently. The neckline is a little low and the collar I wish I put stuff interfacing in, but those are small things. I’m so glad I got to challenge myself with this, learn so many new embroidery stitches and techniques. Even materials with the mesh wire! And the chain mail was such a...thing. After I got it, it turned easy. I love challenging myself and my skill set as well as learning new things and this certainly did that! But finished now to enjoy! I plan on making a separate post for the belt, cause that thing is super cool. #cersei #cerseicosplay #cerseireddress #cerseilannister #lannister #houselannister #handembroidery #embroidery #embellishments #gameofthrones #gameofthronescosplay #got #gotcosplay #worblaspearlyart #chainmail #nolongerwip
From Loki with love ! (they go the other way on the body but shhhh ^^')
I'm so happy I managed to do this in two days ! That actually feels like real progress !
The metal mesh border is only pinned to the lower hand plate for now because I don't have the correct type of glue with me at the moment, so I was considering sewing it to the foam base ... I need to do some experimenting with that ^^ Otherwise I can move on to the detail work !
I really do like working with foam and worbla. The piece that has me both really scared and reaaally excited is the paldron, so I think that will be my next goal !
