Week 1 - #glenjensjulychallenge
- Best Hero
“I will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.” - Wonder Woman
Movie Monday...The return of my film related book challenge has begun! My choice for Best Hero is Wonder Woman, a character I have loved ever since I was a child. Wonder Woman is an iconic character and a fantastic role model, mainly due to her ideals and strong moral compass.
The recent film adaptation was brought to the screen at last in June 2017 after being stuck in development hell since 1996, with Sandra Bullock being one actress linked to the project at one point. With previous DC film adaptations failing to ignite a spark at the box office, Wonder Woman exceeded all expectations when it earned €821.9 million worldwide and received critical acclaim. The film not only proved that a female action hero can indeed be a box office draw, but also that a female director can helm a successful film. A sequel was quickly greenlit, with star Gal Gadot believed to receive a significant pay rise for reprising her role. Patty Jenkins will be back in the director’s chair, and the film is currently scheduled for release November 1st 2019.
Having loved the Lynda Carter tv series, it had been a long wait for me for Wonder Woman to reach the big screen and it really was worth the wait. It was hard to imagine any one else stepping into such a recognisable role, but Gal Gadot was the epitome of what the character of Woman Woman should be and actually a more realistic physical representation of an Amazonian warrior princess. It is a fantastic film and the hunger for female driven films shows no sign of abating, with Ocean’s 8 being one recent film featuring an entirely female cast in lead roles. Long may the film industry continue to recognise the need for powerful female characters! 🎬💪🏻💥👑
