I'm a complete advocate for Venice in winter.
Despite its reputation as an overcrowded city that sold its soul to the (tourism) devil, I managed to experience what felt (in my mind) like old Venice; where the sunset lights the canals on fire, echoing footsteps are heard on cobbled streets, empty alleyways suddenly twist into age-old artisan shops. The locals, too, were so warm and eager to help. They were probably breathing a sigh of relief that the summer crowds had left! Plus, I don't even particularly enjoy perfect, sunny aesthetics; I appreciate atmosphere that's slightly misshapen, when the clouds are blustering and clear blue sky gives way to deeper tones, when I notice bright paint peeling off walls (this also explains why I much prefer sarcastic people over perky types 😌). Travelling off/shoulder season is totally my jam!
There’s finally a snowflake in the forecast. Given recent weather patterns, it’s more likely to be a raindrop or two, but still, the moment has arrived for a winter puzzle. If you need me, don’t bother - this will be the only thing I can think about for the next few days (thanks mom, for the excellent Christmas present). 🎁 .
