Waiting for validation will be the death of your dreams. Waiting until you are ready will not make it happen, the world doesn't work that way.
The world rewards those who are courageous enough to stop waiting and start✌🏻
I think Role Play helped so much when April was little so I wanted to share this for anyone out there that might be dealing with something similar. April and I talked about what to say if someone asked about her vitiligo. We would do a little role-playing to act out how to respond. Sometimes I would pretend to be her and she would call me a name she had heard or she would just ask me about my skin. Then she would play herself and I would ask her about her skin. We would get pretty silly sometimes and I tried to keep it light, not too serious. It just gave her a chance to practice how to respond with a truthful, simple answer. She came up with… "I just have two colors of skin. I was born this way."
The point of "Role Play" is not to come up with the one and only perfect reply to any teasing. There will be different situations and your child will have to think on their feet. The point is to have the discussion with your child before the bully does. The bully will zero in on any shame the child might be feeling. If you can role-play and have an open, honest discussion, that shame is diminished, if not totally dissolved. Don't wait until bullying starts, have this talk now.
I remembered some of the silly things we would say in role-play. I would be the bully and say that April was a tomato. She would laugh. I asked if she thought she was a tomato and she would say of course not. The point was that anyone can say anything, it doesn't make it true. Only if you accept it and decide they are right, can it hurt you. We had to practice so she would know that she wasn't any of those things that anyone called her. We talked about how much her family and friends loved her, just the way she was. We also talked about the bully and some of the reasons they might be teasing her. It could be that they were scared of catching vitiligo. It could be that they were being teased at home or they don't feel good about themselves. And that their behavior is very rarely anything to do with the person they are teasing..

I may have whipped up a batch of peppermint patties.... I will taste a few tonight but they are for work days go avoid the lunchroom donuts!
3 scoops of chocolate Shakeology (not sure if other protein powders will work or taste good)
3 tbsp coconut oil
Melt coconut oil, add peppermint oil (I just blindly add🤣) mix in Shakeology.
Press into mini muffin tins & freeze for 20 min. Pop out of the tins (you may need to give them a little "knock" against the counter). Keep in the freezer & ENJOY!!

Even when I’m not feeling my best, prettiest, strongest, or amazing self I will still sign up and show up. Representation matters is not a catchy slogan or buzz phrase. Growing up and never seeing anyone who looked like me on tv ,not even a damn cereal commercial is not something that I want these babies to have to deal with. Now that I’m a woman with vitiligo I still don’t see US represented on the silver screen, not even a damn cereal commercial. We exist, we are not a trendy item to place in a line up, we are beautiful not in spite of or even because of our skin we are beautiful because we EXIST. So ad agency’s, movie makers, and television show creators we are here and we are part of the great tapestry of the world now put us in a damn cereal commercial!!!! Photo credit: @jay.bxwman

Change is not unfamiliar when you have an autoimmune disorder. As a vitiligan it is part of who I am; however comfortable or not I've learned to embrace my ever changing skin and recently noticed I've regained about 95% of my pigmentation on my face. The irony is with every re-pigmentation I lose a little of myself. In my younger years I thought I cut off my nose to spite my face. Not understanding the trauma of losing a son is what triggered my body to attack itself. Now I can't imagine myself without it. I am his essence and he is mine. Vitiligo can either be a hindrance or a beautiful attribute to one's self. 22 years later since my first spot appeared, I've grown to not hide behind makeup and developed an appreciation for my skin. #Inourskinwewin
is not just for those who have vitiligo, it's for anyone who feels they are not enough. We are all enough! Take a look at yourself and appreciate all that God has given you. We are constantly given blessings disguised as disappointments. Beauty is EVERYWHERE and In EVERYTHING. Somethings may not be as you wished, the trick is to see the blessing hiding within the disappointment. Only God knows his plan; I know he's always with me ❤
Dedicated to my dearest Daniel who would have been 23, mommy loves you.

My Grandfather had vitiligo and as a child, I remember him using my colouring pencils to try and fill in the paler parts of his skin. As a child, his skin was totally 'normal' to me, though not to adults. Looking back I understand he was embarrassed about it. Women with vitiligo should feel INcluded, beautiful, special. We'd never dream of 'shaming' an animal for having unusual markings, so why a human being? People have body markings via tattoos and these are natural body markings. We must encourage our eyes to see beauty, we must educate our minds to have beautiful thoughts and we must allow our emotions to feel the joy of being INclusive.
