This is looking over at the Blackhammer Cairn along a muddy path from my visit to Rousay in Orkney in March. The hills were a beautiful colour and you can see the green fields down by the sea and the view of Orkney Mainland in the distance. I very nearly didn’t bother walking up to this, after a long walk to Midhowe Broch but I talked myself into it, and quite right too! #rousay #loveorkney #blackhammercairn #scotland #visitorkney
Our latest beer in a can - Voe. Orcadian for a creek or bay, Voe is an oatmeal milk stout that’s intended to drink pretty sweet. 5.0% it’s heading out to shops from this week. Popular on keg this is our third beer in can. Cheers 🍻
“In the wind the fulmars never slow.
They crisscross waves,
Skimming low in the trough, close
To the face of each sea. The blows struck by gusts
Loft wings over rollers driven rough
And the fulmars cast across grounds
Trod by seal and crab,
Seined by flounder and whale”
- Peter Munro.
Lola looking at home on Sanday in the north of the Orkney Isles. If you have time to extend your North Coast 500 tour, the totally deserted beaches here are worth the journey. @visitorkney
A fantastic inaugural parkrun this morning with glorious sunshine. Here’s our lovely @katierafferty444
and Barney giving a warm-up before the runners set off for the weekly 5K. Brilliant turnout as well, 108 participants in total! #loveparkrun #pickyorkney #runorkney
And they’re off! A beautiful day for Kirkwall’s inaugural parkrun with a fantastic turnout of 108 participants including a number of little ones and dogs! Parkrun is now a weekly event in Orkney so come up and join us 👍🏻 #loveparkrun #parkrun #runorkney
One of the main roads here in Kirkwall is completely closed for the next 5 weeks or so for works which means a lot of us have to change our route to work.
This morning, just before 7am, I was kinda glad. I would have missed the Bishops and Earls Palaces bathed in the fantastic morning light, which a phone camera just doesn't do justice. Also great to see the rooks nesting, love this time of year!

🏴 Just one of the many stunning views on Orkney
Day 11 - John O Goats to Kirkwall via Burwick
Soundtrack: Hamnavoe market - George Mackay Brown (poem)
500km later I set foot and wheel on South Ronaldsay. I made it. Arriving somewhere has never felt as satisfying. From the seed of a heart dream to the windy wet edge of reality, I am now here.
The wind chased me all the way to Kirkwall.
