Sci Fi Saturday with Space: 1999. The cover of Charlton Comics no.1 features series leads Commander John Koenig (Martin Landau) and Dr Helen Russell (Barbara Bain), as rendered by Joe Staton. Friday Foes: Who knew Space was so orange? Beautiful box art from the 1977 sealed box release of the Dinky Klingon D-7 Class Battle Cruiser encouraging you to build your own fleet. Friday Foes: Dinky D-7 Klingon Battle Cruiser. Fires torpedoes (disks) from the front, loaded through the hole in the top. Friday Foes: Poor Thrust. Everybody loves Starscream, the treacherous lieutenant with Chris Latta’s unforgettably raspy voice. Some even like Skywarp and Thundercracker for their cool colour schemes. Or Dirge for his name... But Thrust? No, there’s not a lot of love for Thrust amongst the Decepticon planes. Which makes it really cool that in 1986 he got his own (pretty rare) coin bank bust. Western Wednesday: with Bret Maverick (James Garner) intrinsically ethical cardsharp and charmer from the western series Maverick which ran from September 22, 1957, to July 8, 1962 (124 episodes) as well as a collection of spin-offs and a feature film thanks to an ever-changing assortment of Bret’s brothers, cousins and sons that could be deployed when one actor decided he’d had enough! “Hey Hey We’re the Monkees!” Long before reality tv was a thing, the Monkees were a curated band of actor-musicians who ironically became one of the most successful bands of the 60s! While there were four members of the group, Remco’s Finger Ding dolls only featured three (l to r) Mike Nesmith, Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz (poor Peter Tork left the group at the end of 1968 even though he has been a mainstay of their reunion tours ever since) (Remco, 1969, missing their boots) #toyboxing #themonkees #monkees #davyjones #petertork #mickeydolenz #michaelnesmith #monkeemobile #themonkeemobile #vintage #vintagetv #vintagetoys #classictv #fingerdingdolls #heyheywerethemonkees #monkeestoy #remco

Just another Martian Monday... Rack toy manufacturer Larami’s (fairly) rare Martian Chronicles figures were based on Charles Fries productions’ 4.5 hour 1980 miniseries adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s classic book of short stories "The Martian Chronicles" (first published in 1950). There are three designs, this one being my favourite - the Martian briefly glimpsed (and shot) by Darren McGavin. They look like Megos but feel like a ping pong ball... While their outfits are actually based on Mego Star Trek’s The Keeper, I like to think they’re wearing Martian leisure wear, all the rage in the 70s... #toyboxing #martian #martians #alien #aliens #spacetoys #alientoys #monstertoys #larami #mego #megoko #themartianchronicles #charlesfries #martianchronicles #raybradbury #mars #vintagetoys #racktoys #plaidstallions #vintagetv #tvminiseries #vintage

Superhero Sunday: Cyborg appeared as part of the third and final wave of Kenner’s Super Powers Line in 1986. He’s one of the most detailed figures in the line - and one of the hardest to find. Fantasy Friday: I know that Arco’s ‘The Other World’ was a bendable knock off of The Masters of the Universe. But given MOTU’s blend of superheroics, fantasy and science fiction, The Other World always seemed more pure fantasy to me, alien and disturbing in a way Masters never was. The Fighting Terrans box set here offers a representative sample of the heroes, He-Man lookalike Ronin and his two-headed dragon steed Gaifand and claw-footed King of the Jipps Raidy with two of the Tiki-like Jipps themselves. Plus the weapons were glow-in-the-dark and that logo was really cool. Toei Animation’s Captain Future, the anime adaptation of the 1940-1951 sf pulp character, commenced in 1978 - a year after Future’s principle author, Edmond Hamilton, passed away. It was enormously popular in France under the name Capitaine Flam, running from 1978-79 for 53 episodes, based on 13 original Hamilton stories. The ‘Three Heroes’ pictured here are the titular moon-born Captain Future (born Curtis Newton), quick witted synthetic man Otto and the strong if not bright seven foot robot Grag. Before there were Transformers there was Diaclone and before there was Optimus Prime there was Diaclone The Great Robot Base! He’s 17 inches of intricate beauty, converting into a base for his miniature crew of Diaclone drivers (not pictured at 1/60 scale). While this example is incomplete, he was a grail of mine for years and remains one of my favourite robots. Diaclone itself is a combination of the words “diamond" and "cyclone" meaning "strong as a diamond, fast as a cyclone". Sunday Supervillains: This (very) rare figure of The Nightmare Prince (with Igor) is the main bumbling antagonist of Midnight Patrol: Adventures in the Dream Zone, a British-American animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera and known outside the US as Potsworth & Co. Midnight Patrol revolves around Potsworth, an English Springer Spaniel and four kids who defend the Dream Zone from the nightmares and other threats posed by The Nightmare Prince. While it only lasted for 13 episodes in 1990 it rated very well in the UK with a well-remembered ad campaign around Potsworth (the real dog who ‘inspired’ his cartoon equivalent). Funnily enough the UK name change was prompted by the BBC, who felt that the suggestion of children being awake after midnight was ‘inappropriate’. Supervillain Sunday: S-S-Slithe may not be one of the hardest Thundercats figures to find but he’s always been a favourite. The brutal leader of the mutants from Plun-Darr (on Third Earth at least) matched cunning and cruelty with arrogance and sarcasm. Plus, unlike the relationship between Skeletor and most of his evil warriors, he only tolerated his alliance with Mumm-Ra out of necessity... and fear. Australian Icons: The Girl from Tomorrow was a kids’ science fiction program that aired from 30 October – 15 November 1990 and was distributed internationally. It involved time travel between 3000 and 1990 with a sequel series following in 1991. Alana (Katharine Cullen) is the titular fourteen-year-old girl. Wandin Valley was the setting for long-running rural medical soap opera ‘A Country Practice’ for 14 seasons from 18 November 1981 – 5 November 1994. Then prime minister Bob Hawke once guest starred on an episode, though the series’ most popular star may have been bad-tempered Fatso the Wombat. The Last Wave was a 1977 mystical thriller starring Richard Chamberlain. Tragically the partnership split in March 1999 after it was revealed that Zig had been convicted in 1994 of indecent assault on his granddaughter - just as they were about to be crowned Moomba monarchs. Australian Icons - Clowns: Still not Pennywise from IT... When Channel 10 launched its Adelaide affiliate television station SAS10 at 4pm on 26 July 1965, the first program broadcast was The Bobo Show starring Charles ‘Hal’ Turner as Bobo the Clown. Bobo was so popular he was mobbed during public appearances and his fans had the chance to join The Bobo club, drink Bobo Cordial and buy Bobo merchandise. Prior to SAS10’s launch, Bobo was already flying each week to Melbourne station ATV0 to appear on The Magic Circle Club. Bono’s defection from Channel 9 to 10 prompted 9’s management to come up with a children’s character that had an image they could copyright and that was not reliant on any single person to play it. Australian Icons: Alexander Bunyip debuted in Michael Salmon’s book “The Monster That Ate Canberra" in 1972. He was named after the author’s pet duck and was based in the Australian Capital Territory’s Lake Burley Griffin. Following devouring most of Canberra he appeared in several follow-up books all written and illustrated by Salmon, before graduating to television. Salmon continued to write for these series and these four books appeared in 1981 - during the series run - featuring additional characters from the program. Kennard was paid £25 for his design and for generations of fans it has become a symbol of anime (Astroboy, Voltron, Kimba), cult tv (Countdown, Recovery, Rage, Monkey Magic) and UK classics (Doctor Who, Ab Fab, Yes Minister) just to name a few. This made it a vital part of Australian culture for generations of Australians who grew up with “backs that are straight and strong you see, help to make a healthy me”. Or waited in vain to have their name called out at the end of the show as the host looked through her magic mirror (grumble) (Fremantle, melamine plate, 1986) #toyboxing #australiantv #australia #australiantelevision #australianicons #classictv #vintagetv #australiaday #changethedate #kwicky #cartoonnetwork #koalatoys #koalas #animation #cartoons #cartoon #romperroomtoys #romperroomaustralia #romperroom #misterdobee #dobee #mrdobee #vintage #vintagetoys #raretoys #australiancentreforthemovingimage
Australian Icons: What makes this plush Koala special? He’s Kwicky Koala, the speedy eponymous star of Hanna Barbera’s The Kwicky Koala Show (September 12 1981 – September 11 1982, check out the tush tag in the second image). Despite being produced in Australia, Kwicky is somewhat unique in being a Koala with an American accent (voiced by writer Bob Ogle). His frequent nemesis was Wilford Wolf (voiced by John Stephenson impersonating Paul Lynde) and the character is most notable for being the final one to be designed by cartoon great Tex Avery (who died the same year this Mighty Star Toy was released, 1980) #toyboxing #australiantv #australia #australiantelevision #australianicons #classictv #vintagetv #australiaday #changethedate #kwicky #cartoonnetwork #koalatoys #koalas #animation #cartoons #cartoon #hannabarberatoys #hannabarberacartoons #thekwickykoalashow #kwickykoala #saturdaymorningcartoons #texavery #hannabarbera #vintage #vintagetoys #raretoys #vintagehannabarbera #rarehannabarbera #australiancentreforthemovingimage
Australian Icons: “Did Dick? Dick did. Clever Dick!” Graham Kennedy, the King of Australian Television, enjoyed success on radio and film as well as television - though he is perhaps best remembered for hosting Tonight-style Show “In Melbourne Tonight” (IMT) and game Show “Blankety Blanks” - both of which allowed him to indulge his bawdy and irreverent humour without paying too much attention to the formats (shows would frequently run overtime or carry across multiple episodes thanks to Kennedy’s improvised comedy). Blankety Blanks (running from 24 January 1977 – 3 November 1978) is immortalised here in a game - now with extra Ugly Dave Gray and ‘Dick’ jokes (at least I’m assuming that’s what the ‘wallet stiffener’ would be... ) #toyboxing #australiantv #australia #australiantelevision #australianicons #classictv #vintagetv #australiaday #changethedate #grahamkennedy #gragra #kingoftelevision #blanketyblanks #imt #channelten #networkten #inmelbournetonight #uglydavegray #noelferrier #noelinebrown #stuartwagstaff #vintage #vintagetoys #australiancentreforthemovingimage
