What it means to be a good mom + being sexy... We realized a growing mental health issue among women who developed body image struggles in early to late adolescence, and we blamed the unattainable ideals put into our minds by the media. I'm not saying that's not a factor, but we also have to take a look at our family system and what ideas are being communicated from mother to daughter about self-esteem and self-image.
If you heard your mom saying she thinks she looks awful, her hips are too big/skinny, and that she looks terrible in everything she packed for the summer vacation, most likely you'll repeat those same messages to yourself when you grow up. Our self-talk/inner voice is very heavily influenced by our family's ideals.
So if I want my daughter to be confident, secure in her body, and able to rock that swimsuit without hating her cellulite and stretch marks as she develops, I've got to walk the talk and show her how it's done. You can't hate your body image and then hope your daughter doesn't. No amount of "you're beautiful sweetie" makes up for setting an unhealthy example because actions often speak louder than words.
