"A waste report for @tedxubud
"We've always worked with @ecobalirecycle
to manage our waste from @tedxubud
and make a strong commitment to reducing use of plastic and single-use items. However, this year was special as Eco Bali co-founder Paola Cannucciari helped us to plan a more assertive waste sorting system for attendees." Proud we were able to divert over 85% of all our waste from landfill this year.

Does tourism really contribute to sustainable development? In the first "Good Tourism" Insight Dr Susanne Becken explains the purpose of the Global Sustainable Tourism Dashboard.
Dr Becken is Professor of Sustainable Tourism at Griffith University and Director of the Griffith Institute for Tourism as well as one of the initiators of the Dashboard.
Guten Morgen ihr Lieben 😊 Startet gut in den Tag! 💕☀️
We are on a mini mission to reduce our landfill waste ♻️ one of things we have incorporated into our lives is a piggy bucket 🐷 it's a win win really, we feed some local hungry piggies AND we save our food scraps from the landfill 🤸♀️ the kids think it's pretty flipping cool and even our 18mo is fully on board and loves adding her last bite of "naanaa" to the bucket, she doesn't want the piggies to miss out 😍
Apparently the bucket has lots of uses too 😏😅

Meet Jose, the owner and operator of La Escuelita.
He is a local Nicaraguan surfer with over 15 years of experience (and he’s the owner of several gold medals including best long-boarder in Central America). That being said.. while he loves the water, he also loves the land.
He owns a sustainable organic farm with his wife and the cutest little girl. He grows his own food, raises farm animals, and uses sustainable practices to enrich the land.
He frequently rescues animals from all walks of life.. including this little guy “Boots” 🐒. This surf camp is different then most. While he wants people to learn to surf (and love it!), he wants people to feel like part of a family.
A focus on surfing, sustainability and a truly authentic cultural experience is what this little surf school has to offer.

Food Republic, a popular food court chain owned by Singapore public-listed BreadTalk Group, is offering patrons a 10% discount for bringing their own food containers. Their campaign is valid till 30 June 2018. While non-polystyrene takeaway plastic containers can be placed in National Environment Agency recycling bins, polystyrene takeaway cups and containers are not recyclable. According to a UN report released by the global authority on UN World Environment Day (June 5), less than a 10th of all the plastic ever made has been recycled and governments should consider banning or taxing single-use bags or food containers to stem the tide of pollution. ・・・
2018 is Singapore’s Year of Climate Action and we want you to lessen your use of plastic! Enjoy 10% off when you bring your food container for the purchase of food at any Food Republic outlets or Food Opera (min. spend of $6 in a single transaction). Terms and conditions apply
Here at Treasured Tots we provide meaningful and purposeful experiences. The children have been exploring different textures from nature that have been hand picked from the environment, the purpose for this experience has stemmed from a child’s interest. Using children’s interests as the basis for our curriculum decision making helps to ensure that learning is not only interesting but also meaningful and relevant to children.

One of the most fulfilling engagements I am focusing on now is @ProjectLiyab
in which it advocates for affordable and clean energy for all. 💡 Through the Sikat Impact Challenge, our team is able to accelerate our goal of lighting the homes of indigenous people who do not have access to electricity. Personally, I admire them for incubating programs like ours since it changes not only the lives of the people in the Aeta community, but also, us, the advocates. 🌞 Kudos to @sikatchallenge
BAG BAN 2.0 🛍🙅♀️
Unfortunately, barrier bags for unpackaged fruits and veggies are not part of the plastic bag ban coming into force here in Queensland on the 1st July 👎 I find these bags to be super flimsy, break easily, and tend to only be able to be used once 😡 I wish that these bags were part of the ban, as I seem to pick many during clean ups! ——
Then what should we use to bag up our fruits and veggies, you say 🤷♀️ You can either leave your produce loose #freethefruit
, use the brown paper mushroom bags, purchase some reusable produce bags, or make your own! 🍎🍐🥦🍅🍊
I chose the latter. Three weeks ago I taught myself to sew using YouTube videos and knocked out a tonne of these simple cotton bags using a borrowed sewing machine. I sewed in an elastic loop at the top to close them off, and a plastic tag at the bottom from a old folder. This tag is useful to write tare and PUL numbers 👌You can make these bags using old sheets and pillow cases lying around or from an op shop, making them super affordable 💃

In 2006 Starbucks reported to the Environmental Alliance to produce about 600 billion plastic/paper cups per year. The CO2 emission per cup is 0.24 lbs... so Starbucks is responsible for about One Hundred Forty-four BILLION POUNDS of CO2 emission per year.
That’s ONLY Starbucks. Tully’s Coffee estimated 16 billion cups annually.
Now... if you use one cup per day, for a year that’s 87.6 lbs of CO2 emissions per year...(You can check my YouTube video or earlier post regarding the importance of Greenhouse Gases)
Coffee cups are NOT recyclable/biodegradable (most of them) because they have a plastic lining on the inside.
These cups in my picture go EVERYWHERE with me (maybe not the pink one lol) but the coffee one sure does. It was ONLY 2.99 and it’s SO lightweight. (I’m actually not super pro Starbucks hence why I just covered it up but can’t deny it’s a good alternative) I’m sure there is ‘better’ models out there that are made out of stainless steel (by far the greenest option in my eyes/opinion) but this is a small step that can save the world from almost 90lbs of CO2 emissions just by investing THREE DOLLARS!!! I URGE you to get a reusable cup. The amount of cups that end up in landfills is INSANE. Most plastic bottles/cups are NOT biodegradable (they’re man made molecules not recognized by our earth hence does not fully disintegrate) and they end up in soil or seas in what is now called ‘micro bead’ epidemic... Do you use a reusable cup??

As some of you know, I'm on a journey to living more sustainably, and as part of that I've been gradually switching out store bought, plastic contained products for more natural alternatives that come in earth friendly or zero packaging, so a shampoo bar has been something I've wanted to try for A LONG TIME. When I saw a shampoo bar making class pop up on facebook, I jumped at the chance to sign up...and my bottled shampoo was almost out, perfect timing! 👌
Fast forward a week and I'm at a @bangkok.soap.opera
class run by Maria who is super knowledgeable on all things soap and natural skin/haircare, not to mention uber talented at what she does. She gently guided our class as we made this lovely bar - infused with kaffir lime and pea flower - while explaining every step and answering all of our questions.
I took the bar for a spin this morning and as expected, it left my hair feeling a teeny bit sticky. The thing with using a shampoo bar is that it can take a few weeks for your hair to adjust to a more natural alternative and long story short, it can get worse before it gets better, so you have to keep at it for awhile before you see true results.
I've heard that using an apple cider vinegar rinse afterwards helps A LOT with that sticky feeling, so I'll have to try that next time and see what difference it makes for me.
Who else here uses or has used a shampoo bar and do you love 'em or hate 'em? ❤/🙅🏽♀️

Ever since I heard the phrase "closeted waste" in sustainability class at uni, I've been trying to use up or move on my endless stuff.
Knitted this Dr Who length scarf with some leftover cotton from my yarn box. (On knitting machine, that is. I can't actually knit.)
