"The beauty you see in me, is the reflection of you" - Rumi
Someone once explained this to me in a very catchy way. She took out a paper and drew horizontal and vertical lines. Asked me "what does it looks to you?". Although I am NOT a math-brain I told her it looks like four quadrants to me. She told me, "a human as a 'person' functions in four different areas. Now I want you to tell me what four areas are. I had no clue, but after some struggles I asked her "family?" She nodded, and wrote whatever I blurted one by one, filling the columns. "Family, social, career. Whats the last one, Hiba? You missed the most important one!". I thought harder and said, "personal?". "Yes, the self".
She asked me to fill that column with what belong to only myself. Which followed my emotions, dreams, experiences, self esteem, self-respect, self-confidence, self-image, self-love and all those "self-"s which ONLY belonged to me. She told me, "this is the most important area. Because if you aint content in yourself, and is facing problems with the "self-"s, its gonna reflect in every other areas. Your family, social life, academics or career. And if your "self-"s are okay and still facing problems in family or friendships, it means they have problem with their "self-"s and should be taken care of".
Your "self-"s are important. If you dont see the beauty in yourself you might find it hard to find the beauty in others. Or even if you find it, you cant appreciate it. Some might even say you dont have to love yourself to love others.
But isnt love and appreciation two different things?
