I listened to my body and took it easy all week, and was rewarded with a fast AF tempo. I was going to do 8 miles at an easy pace, but my first mile was 9:12 so I switched to a 6 mile tempo, because Iโ€™m never one to waste a good speed day. 9:12/9:00/8:54/8:54/8:50/8:05. Iโ€™m trying to practice control in tempos, because I always go full throttle, so I was going to try and keep it between 9:00-9:10, but even with pulling off the gas for the last .25 of each mile, I was STILL averaging an ~8:55. This felt amazing, between a 6 or 7/10 effort, I swear I couldโ€™ve kept running, but I didnโ€™t want to push too hard. So, I threw it down in my last mile. ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ Though, that last mile was a bit tough because it turns out there was some kind of concert event in the park I always run through, so I was dodging and bobbing and weaving through kids and food trucks for a half mile. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I would like to dedicate this amazing run to my Rad Rabbit crop, my Epic Reacts (which I havenโ€™t worn in months because of my knee), and this glorious overcast day. I'm slowly starting to see and feel the physical and mental changes since starting up my training again and I'm finally starting to feel like myself. I took a little break from running during my move and oh man, do I regret it. I gained almost 10 pounds and my anxiety and depression were through the roof. The physical changes are not insane, I've lost maybe 2 or 3 lbs, though I have so much more energy now. My mental and emotional well being has become so much better. Some people think I'm crazy because I love running, but it's given me such an amazing release for my mental, emotional, and physical health (and it's a big plus that running has brought some amazing people into my life). Do what makes you happy and your body and mind will thank you. Self care comes in many different forms.

Iโ€™m trying to be good about taking easy runs easy, but hereโ€™s the truth: I HATE easy runs. There, I said it. My body seems to be working almost as hard for a fraction of the reward. On Sunday my average HR for 10 miles @ 9:30 pace was 165. Tonight, I ran 3 miles @ 10:30 and was averaging a 157. On slow runs my body is lazy and sluggish, and I never find a good groove. So, I kicked it up for the last half mile just to feel that sweet, blissful speed in my legs. I know easy runs are super important, so I will continue to try and execute them, but just know Iโ€™m not happy about it. ๐Ÿ˜‚ P.S. While we often shoot straight for mobility drills to improve our position, we can possibly make equal changes with something simpler. . ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ So what weโ€™re going to work on is the stability and control of our thoracic spine in the bottom position. Building strength In this region is just as important as mobility. So grab a relatively light weight to start. . ๐Ÿ’€ Sink to the bottom of the squat with the weight close to your body then start pressing out. You should find that this is a tad difficult, and thatโ€™s fine. Itโ€™s the reason weโ€™re working on this. . ๐Ÿ˜Œ This is also a fun trick to try for those who think that they โ€œcanโ€™t squatโ€ due to โ€œpoor flexibilityโ€. 4 miles @ 10:25 tonight. Much better. Now that Iโ€™ve thought about it, Iโ€™m thinking maybe my dead legs this week were less to do with work and more to do with my long run this weekend. Maaaaybe my coach was right. Probably shouldโ€™ve stuck with 8 miles. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Tonight was still slow and tired, but it felt a million times better than yesterday. I need to remind myself that training is a long road, and thereโ€™s no need to push too hard, too soon. Itโ€™s literally a marathon, not a sprint. Just because I canโ€™t run as far as I could a couple months ago doesnโ€™t mean I wonโ€™t be able to in due time. It's my 10th E3 (yes, tenth!) and for the first time in my E3 history, I squeezed a run in! Sweating it out in the 8 am heat (yes, 8 am, I hit snooze too many times) was good practice / sharpened my blades. ๐ŸŽฎ E3 used to be my week off training smack in the middle of SF marathon crunch time, but this time, I couldn't pass up running around the LACC and seeing waves of gamers walking to the convention that marked my end of college and start of my career in video games. One way we can load this up, is with a kettlebell (KB). . ๐Ÿค” How we can scale and individualize this? By lifting on an elevated surface, in my case, aerobic boxes. . ๐Ÿ”ฅ Depending on your hamstring flexibility, degree of lowback pain, or hip ROM, we raise or lower the surface we lift from. High box, decreased ROM and stress required. This is just about the only emotion I could muster after that garbage attempt at a run. It was one of those rare days where you really donโ€™t feel like going out for a run, but you make yourself do it, and you donโ€™t feel better afterwards. Work was, of course, insane. I know youโ€™re probably tired of me saying that, and trust me I am pretty tired of it too, haha. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, though. I took a rest/self-care day yesterday, which was much needed, but apparently my body wanted a second one. One dumpster fire of a mile; Side stitch, heavy legs, knee pain, heart rate through the roof even though I only averaged a 10:48 mile... I decided that cranking out 3 to 5 miles on such an exhausted body wasnโ€™t going to do me any favors, so I conceded.
