Just Quit Already: Day by Day Through Year One of Retirement. Day 20, Mon July 20: Guy Clark sings: “Only two things that money can’t buy / And that’s true love and homegrown tomatoes.” We are enjoying a bountiful harvest. I can’t deny that I get overly emotionally involved with the tomato patch. We will eat tomatoes straight off the vine in all their forms, and when we max out I will make batches of tomato juice and tomato sauce that will go into the freezer. We will still be harvesting a few leftover tomatoes in mid-October before we tear out the garden.
We also harvest garlic today. We pull them up, clean off the dirt and hang them with clothespins on clothesline in the studio. There are a couple-dozen garlic plants and they will last us into next summer. They make good gifts, too: sometimes when we have people over for dinner we send them home with a head of garlic as a lagniappe; we get fresh-out-of-the-hen eggs from a woman in our neighborhood and once in a while we give her garlic as a friendly gesture. And Enid cut flowers for two bouquets: one comprised beautiful, wispier red, yellow and purple blooms, what she called “un bouquet champêtre” (“a field bouquet”) and set on the dining table; and another of huge yellow and red zinnias . . . 35/ My surgery for the touch of cancer was at a midwestern hospital compound, an entire wing of which was rumored to be owned by the Saudis for their personal use. According to an orderly, this explained the nearby landing strip as well as a fine-dining restaurant tucked away on the first floor. Not long after the surgery, I made it down to this fine dining restaurant to have soup with my husband and his son and granddaughter who had gone to some trouble to come and visit us there. The restaurant was empty, save for the staff. I’d never been on pain medicine before, and you could say my verso was exposed. Throughout dinner, I could not stop myself from getting up and trying out seats at the empty tables around us.
… “I’m sorry,” I said, returning to our table for the last time, not wanting to upset my husband’s granddaughter. She was 8 and she’d brought along two stuffed animals, a small brown dog and a green frog. I was to choose one as my gift. Whichever one I didn’t want, she said she would keep as her own. As we waited for the check, I sat holding on to a corner of the tablecloth. My husband said nothing, but his son, sitting across from me smiled. “You so want to get up again, don’t you?” …
I chose the dog, though I could tell that my husband’s granddaughter wanted it. I could tell because after I chose the dog she said softly, “Awwwww, I wanted the dog.” And still I kept it and she was stuck with the lousy frog. …

I wasn’t always a financial coach. I was a teacher 👩🏫. I knew nothing about money. I didn’t know how to invest. I didn’t even know what IRA stood for. I wasn’t a numbers person (except for my times tables). And I NEVER wanted anything to do with it.
Until... someone showed me the Rule of 72 and compounding interest. To my amazement, money and investing wasn’t hard at all. How could I, a pretty educated person, never have learned these simple concepts? Financial education is lacking and basically nonexistent in the US. So I took my excitement and made a career change. I vowed that I would help change the retirement outcome in America through education and empowerment. Now I am blessed to teach and coach people about money and help impact their future - perhaps even more than when I was in the classroom.
Moral of the story.. follow your ♥️. Take the leap with that new opportunity. No regrets. You just never know where it might lead you.
Be confident in who you are/who God has created you to be! There is no other you. You have been fearfully and wonderfully made. Stop comparing yourself to others, and step out today in CONFIDENCE! ☺️❤️ #youvegotthis #beconfident #confidence
and by 2050, the global population of people aged over 60 is expected to reach 2.1 billion, more than 10 times the size it was in 1950. While tech and medicine developments have increased life expectancy by 27%, this is placing a huge financial strain on social security (Stylus, 2018).⠀
Consequently, there is a need to create services that help people approaching retirement save their money more effectively: @unitedincome
provides holistic financial planning and investment management, and creates personalised spending projections with tailored saving recommendations.⠀
Brands have to stay ahed in this new era of finance where the burden is shifting: Globally, government benefits for retirement have reduced by 38% and only 43% of employers offer a retirement plan that includes an employer contribution⠀

I did stop my 401k a few months ago to get my shit together and stop getting further in debt and to build my $1,000 emergency fund and to start my sinking funds. I also figured out how to stick to a budget. However, my income is only about $40,000 base pay and I have over $100,000 in debt. As much as I try, I can’t fathom going 5 years without contributing to my 401k if my employer will match 4% if I contribute 5%. That’s probably about $11,000. I understand stopping if my journey was just a few years but unfortunately, it is not going to be. I see all the time how it works for people but it just makes me nervous and losing out on money does not sounds ideal either. If it was just my contribution, ok fine. But it’s losing out on what my employer would also contribute is what gets me the most.

While summer is sometimes measured in liters of lemonade 🍋 — we’re in the double digits here at stnce — goals are often measured by milestones. On this road map to completed feats, the middle of the year seems like the perfect time to check in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So let’s see where we’re at this weekend, by taking an hour between swimming and the grill to list off our progress with our most important goals of the year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whether it’s a goal to save, invest, advance your career or launch a new idea, we’ve been working hard and it’s time to take stock of our accomplishments. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As for any setbacks, they’re a part of life too, and as long as we resolve to keep moving in the “goal forward” position, our determination will help us stay on the path to our dreams. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Celebrate. Resolve. Keep moving.
