More shenanigans with the paper plates 😃. These two exercises are a great way to stretch out the thoracolumbar fascia, an area through the back that often gets tight when the pelvis is in an anterior tilt (hip bones tilt forward, lower back over arches and bottom sticks out). At the same time the deep abdominal muscles; multifidus, TVA, interval + external obliques have to work to stabilise the action. CONNECTING YOUR GLUTES AND LATS Hey guys? Here’s an exercise to start activating your POS (posterior oblique sling). Your POS connects your opposing glutes and lats, and plays a crucial role in powering efficient rotation. Training these in isolation with traditional lifting in the Sagital plane disconnects them from each other and will eventually create a poor capacity for dynamic movement so it’s really important to train them in sequence like this. This is a tricky exercise and should be attempted when the basic functional patterns principles have been addressed. THE EXERCISE Important to know that this is not intended as a scapular retraction exercise. The aim is to keep the scapula in a neutral position and rotate the whole ribcage using the lat. Keeping the hip fixed as we rotate the ribcage will help prime us for the counter rotation needed to walk and run. It must be done from a neutral position and is a good starting point to begin working on gait mechanics. What we hope to happen is a sequenced activation of the lat and opposite glut as we pull ourselves into the rotation. LOW BACK PAIN - SPINE OR BRAIN? Low back pain can be a result from a number of causes. Of course, after sinister pathology ruled out, pain can also be a behavioural output response by the brain. In this instance, pain may be a result from uncertainty or ambiguity due to sensory conflict. If there is any conflict between our vision, inner ear acceleration sensors, and joint/muscle input during general movement, then we have no other option but to estimate where we are in space, and sometimes we just guess wrong! As a result from guessing wrong, pain can induce short term change to address any conflict that arises in our system. This is analagous to the feeling of motion sickness when reading a book in a mobile car. Have you ever woken up in the morning, gone to get out of bed, and realise your neck muscles have spasmed and you can’t move due to pain? This is a fairly common situation seen in the clinic. . Here is electrotherapeutic dry needling to the levator scapular. While this muscle contributes to shoulder elevation and neck lateral flexion, it is also innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve which originates from C5 and is often involved with painful neck situations. . Electrotherapeutic dry needling (EMDN) involves an electrical current flowing between two filiform needles. The electrical current pulse causes a contraction which can reduce pain, increase nerve function and quicken the healing process. . EMDN was used in conjunction with nerve manipulation, joint mobilisation and soft tissue manipulation. . EMDN can be used to treat ligaments, tendons and a fat pad as well. If you hurt yourself during an activity, of course you may need to rest in the immediate aftermath to let an acute injury heal. However, an ongoing chronic ache or pain is not going to get better through rest. Resting for too long causes muscle atrophy and prohibits the vital flow and cleanse of oxygen and toxins. Not good for recovery. Rather than getting caught in a cycle of feeling pain, resting for a bit until the pain goes away and then doing the same thing you did before and feeling the pain again, understand that pain is your body’s way of asking you to change something. If you continue to rest without changing the internal environment of the joint, all you’re doing is giving yourself short term respite and causing longer term damage. If you don’t change the internal environment of the joint, eventually the dysfunction will stop your play. 🏃🏼‍♂️ Running will turn to walking, 🚶‍♀️ walking will turn to cycling, 🚴‍♀️ cycling will turn to swimming and 🏊‍♀️ swimming will turn to sitting on a sofa 🛋 . Postural Alignment Therapy will teach you how to move in a way which brings your joints back to functional alignment.

HOWEVER it does make your body work in the right way so ALL of your muscles tone where they should.
