ANT-MAN AND THE WASP
After a streak of good-to-great Marvel movies, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ falls short of achieving that same quality and joins the list of average additions to the MCU. Quite frankly, this is a shallow and very predictable movie that doesn’t carry much consequence at all; the antagonist(s?) are more of a light irritation than an actual threat. However, the visual effects are impressive, the action is captured with a playful zing, and Michelle Pfeiffer alone is worth the price of admission. This film won’t be making any top 10 lists, but it has its place in the universe.
We spend the majority of the film meeting the crew and, other than some scintillating performances from the cast, with the standout being Anne Hatheway, it's all largely unremarkable until the fun, throwback third-act heist itself. Director Gary Ross checks off plot point after plot point in erratic fashion, never allowing the characters time to breathe and be realized as full-fledged, three-dimensional beings. See it for the Soderbergh-esque style, but don’t expect much substance beneath it all.
A movie centering on a group of adult men playing a game of tag for a full month every year was more entertaining than it had any right to be. Although there’s a clear lack of conflict in this plot and the majority of the film’s humor come from the absurdity of the situations rather than clever writing, ‘Tag’ is carried to the finish line by the undeniably strong chemistry among its leading actors as well as the creative way in which the slapstick “action” sequences are captured.
This is a blatant ‘Die Hard’ rip-off that actively botches elements of the formula that made the Bruce Willis-led movie one of the most beloved action movies of all time such as a relatable protagonist, sharp dialogue, ingenious thrills and a colorful villain. Taking its ridiculous premise much too seriously, 'Skyscraper' manifests as a rather bland and instantaneously forgettable summer movie featuring The Rock battling against some of the worst CGI fire you’ll ever see.
