So, real quick: Cardio alone does not equal fat loss. It should be thought of as an extra tool to use with your strength training and proper diet… ⠀ If you’re eating less than your body burns each day, your body has no choice but to tap into its stored blubber 😌 ⠀ Excessive cardio becomes an issue for folks when hours and hours are invested in it because: ⠀ ⠀ Your appetite gets ramped up 😟 ⠀ Your chances of losing muscle are increased 💪👎 ⠀ Your hard efforts can be ruined in one single snack 🥜🍎 ⠀ And it’s tough to stick to an intense schedule, especially with everything else you have going on 😣 ⠀ So, if you want to use cardio as a handy tool to speed up the process… ⠀ ⠀ HIIT Cardio (High-Intensity Interval Training) is my favorite for that 🙃 ⠀ It’s been shown to burn more body fat, lower the chance of losing muscle, and the best part, you’ll spend less time doing it ✅ ⠀ HIIT Workout Example📝 ⠀ After a 3-5 minute warm-up of low intensity, you’ll be alternating between: ⠀ Max output (30 seconds) Moderate output (60 seconds) (active recovery) ⠀ ⠀ For the duration of 20 to 30 minutes without stopping in between 😅 ⠀ The treadmill, rowing machine, and bike are great for this method of cardio🏃‍♀️🚣‍♀️🚴‍♂️ ⠀ End with another 3-5 minute cool down… ⠀ Bonus: You can also do 15 minutes of HIIT and then 15 minutes of steady state cardio 😤 ⠀ 2 to 3 sessions a week is all you need so it doesn’t interfere with your workouts, and it’s your preference, but I always enjoyed doing HIIT on non-lifting days🏋‍♀️ ⠀ And of course, this is not any magic solution — it’s a useful tool that may be a more enjoyable option for you to help stay consistent… ⠀ Along with using cardio more as a strategic tool, rather than doing excessive amounts 5-6 days a week 💯 ⠀ Have you tried HIIT before? 🤔 . 🌟Why You Need Rest Days!🌟 ⠀ 🏃🏼‍♀️I know you love working out, but it’s important for you to take a day off. and no, you won’t gain fat! ⠀ 🗓I used to train 7 days a week. No rest. No recovery. Just an “all-out” mentality and a determination to burn as many calories as possible. ⠀ 📊I thought that my progress would come faster if I exercised everyday. I figured it would speed my fat loss results up, right? ⠀ 💥Lol.. I was sooo wrong 🤭 And so I want to explain why you need recovery days and just how important they are for success - with fat loss, muscle gain, and just in general! ⠀ 💪🏼When you workout, you cause some chaos in your body. When you lift weights, you cause micro-tears in your muscles. When you run or perform endurance work, you put stress on your body. ⠀ 😴When we take time off, that’s when we have a chance to recover and repair the “damage” and allow us to get stronger, faster, and better. ⠀ ☝🏼How often do you need rest/recovery days? ✅ 1-3x a week, depending on your experience level and preference. Had a great run last night, and no, this shirt is not wet from the rain. 🤭 - Thought of the day: - We often set big goals for ourselves & we often fail at achieving those goals. It’s not because our goals are impossible or anything. It is more that we do not have a true understanding of what it takes to achieve them. - To run a marathon, it takes a lot more than just going out & running a bunch of miles per week. For weight loss, it takes a lot more than just cutting calories to lose weight. This is why we often end up falling back into old habits. - Why are so many successful? - It’s because they have a plan. It’s not because they are super motivated because I sure as heck was not for last nights run. I was exhausted & the Josh before having a running coach would have decided to take it easy after a long day (a coach is a great way to keep you accountable because you know they are watching & waiting to see you check-in for that workout but they also provide you with a plan). - 1) You need to create a plan via hopping on Google & searching for a plan or reaching out for professional help so that you have a plan customized to you. - 2) You need to schedule a day & time to workout versus just going on the day that is most convenient for you. Take a look at your calendar at the beginning of the week & get everything important that cannot be cancelled scheduled. Then, schedule your workouts. - 3) You need to understand that things always take longer & will be harder than expected. It’s not going to take 30-days to build a new habit & see results. Definitely plan for longer than 90-days as to achieve your goal(s) will take time. So, start today & be as consistent as possible. - 4) You need to understand that things in life will always get in the way but there’s always a way around them. If an unexpected meeting comes up or life event happens, so be it. Reschedule the workout for later in the day or week but don’t just cancel it, reschedule it. - 5) You need to create short term goals to help you achieve your long term goals. Therefore, if your goal is to lose 10-100 pounds, then you need to learn how to lose weight without going extreme & causing burnout.

Sleeping like a badass...😴 # Sleep is one of those things that we know is really important but improving it is often easier said than done. There are lots of ways to improve sleep but here are 3 that I have found most helpful (and are well supported by research: # 1. Eat some carbs: Eating carbs, acting via insulin secretion and the "plasma tryptophan ratio", increases serotonin release, which is important for sleep. Starchy or sweet foods will work (except for ones containing fructose). Around 20-30g of carbs is enough for the brain to make serotonin (equivalent to 2 slices of bread or 50g of cereal).🤓 # 2. Use relaxation techniques: Relaxation techniques reduce physiological arousal which makes it easier to sleep. I like guided meditations but you can also use breathing or visualization techniques, progressive muscle relaxation, stretching, yoga or anything else that helps you to relax. 😌 # 3. Build a bedtime routine: Trying to wind down ahead of actually going to bed can make it much easier to fall asleep at bedtime. Ideally this time shouldn’t involve using technology but instead building some habits that help you to wind down. Things like making a hot drink or reading a favourite book can be helpful. Once you have these habits established, you should find you naturally start to feel sleepy when you do them before bed. 😎 # What do you find helpful for sleep?
HOT TO SQUAT by @fitterbodyplan. - The squat. Probaby one of the best functional moves for strength and on a day to day basis as well. - But so many people get it wrong, so let's break it down. - 1. Feet a bit outside shoulder width apart (how wide depends on your build and muscle focus) - 2. Chest up, back straight, tighten the core. - 3. If you have a bar on your back, make sure it is on your back and not on your neck. If you are holding a weight in front, make sure it is at collarbone so you don't hunch forward. If bodyweight, hands can go anywhere but off of your legs. - 4. Dig your heels into the floor for a stable base of support. - 5. Bend your knees, and take your hips down and back like you're sitting on a chair. How low you go will depend on any weaknesses, mobility restrictions or target as well but as a general rule of thumb thighs parallel to floor or lower. - 6. Keep your upper body upright and your posture strong. - 7. Push your heels into the floor and squeeze your glutes (yes that means your butt cheeks) together as you stand. - 8. Keep a slight bend in the knees when you come up so the work stays in the muscles and out of the joints. - And that's it.
