body distracted men from her tallons. Top right depicts #oedipus
killing a #sphynx
in La Destruction de la Noble Cité de Thèbes c 1500s. A spynx is part gorgeous woman, lion, and snake who posed a riddle and was defeated due to supposed superior masculine intellect. In medieval times intellect was seen as masculine and #sexulality
so they concieved that beautiful intellectual women were #monsterous
Bottom Left depicts The Anatomy of a Womans Tongue, 1658. This text addressed a #male #reader
on how to handle a new wife and mentioned the five ways women supposedly used their tongues: medicine, poison, as a serpent, fire, and thunder.
and more depict the negative beliefs that women have endured for millenia and continue to endure. It is only through acceptance and #education
that these thoughts can be overthrown.
