Great white sharks are known to be highly migratory, with individuals making long migrations every year. In the eastern Pacific Ocean, great whites regularly migrate between Mexico and Hawaii. In other ocean basins, individuals may migrate even longer distances.

"The Watcher of the Whales"
A collaboration with @themockpenguin
While so many people flock to Vancouver island every year to go "whale watching" they seem to have forgotten to actually look out for the whales themselves. That is what the watcher is here for. He is here to remind us all that our "whale watching" boats are actually destroying the exact population of whales they take people to see. The Southern Resident killer whale population of Vancouver island is endangerred and declining rapidly, with only 73-76 members still alive and an average loss of 3 whales per year, they have very little time left. Sadly this is the exact group of whales that 95% of whale watching operations in BC take you to observe.
The noise and disruption these watching boats create has been linked directly to this decline in whale population numerous times, but tourism dollars are apparently more important and so activities don't change. This year for the first time ever, the BC government introduced a motion stating it would fine any whale watching operations that disturbed the whales during their mating this year. Unfortunately this was just a ploy to look good for the public, whale watching boats still left Victoria and Tofino daily and the coast guard hasn't charged a single person yet to my knowledge.
Sorry about the rant y'all but I have begun to find myself very troubled lately by the various supposedly "environmentally friendly" actions taken by the BC government while that province continues to destroy the earth. I will be making alot of pieces in the near future that will be influenced by the destruction of our forests and oceans, and our need to protect them. I grew up outside in those forests and this will be my own attempt to help people realize just what we are actually doing. This piece is available so feel free to send me a message if you are interested!
Did you know that two effects of global warming, both ocean acidification and rising temperatures, weaken coral immune systems? 🤔🐠 See link in profile to learn more! .
