signature “Yeghck!” Is #nostalgic
for me because it’s something the old guys used to say in VA as an expression. |
Anyone from #oldschool
P-Town should remember the Chinese food spot right outside the limits of Ida Barber. Of course, you go in and order “Yok” “Yok Lo Mein” “Yok o mein” “Yat Ka Mein” with diced chicken, soy sauce, oil, AND ___ |
(if you can name the last ingredient, I got #love
for you. Take a guess!!!!)
Because “Yok” sounds so much like “Yuck” (which they call it in parts of the Carolinas), My grandpa would take me into the restaurant (he seemed to know the owners) and he would sit me on the counter and everyone would crowd around and wait... Then he’d go, “Whatchu want?!” And I’d say, “YEGHCK!!!” Everyone would laugh and we’d get madd food — way more than normal sized box lol.
Yok was first produced in the USA, right in our backyard, 7 cities at the Sun Noodle Company factory (still there).
Yok is something the working class thrived on, esp from the shipyard and dry dock. Wasn’t until a friend and comrade, Raymond Chow, explained to me the origin of the “One Family #Noodles
” — which was something migrant workers and the less fortunate would order together in one bowl, pitch in, and share “Family Style” as #brothers
. Pretty much the same aura of what it would become in our stomping ground. Affordable comfort food. #SoulFood
, if you will.
When you want Yok in Tidewater, you’ll find it in Chinese take-out restaurants, like Sing Wong in P-Town, owned by Patsy and Haymond Wong. Haymond’s grandfather, the restaurant’s namesake, opened it in 1965. |
Or you can wait for a yock fundraiser – popular in black churches in Tidewater – where the sistas have learned the #recipe #Culture #Exchange
That said... the theme of togetherness, #family
, migrant workers, hard #work
, less fortune, sharing, culture, #childhood
... it all makes me think of what’s going on at the borders and the FACT this is a nation of immigrants. Who make it #Dope
