A look around Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World at the end of Henderson Street in New Orleans.
Throwing down the gauntlet here: Mardi Gras is the best costume holiday. Yeah I said it. Here's the thing: Halloween is about having a good idea. Worrying if people will "get it." Trying to look like something that already exists. Mardi Gras costumes are sheer creativity and wonderfulness and they're better and I will fight you on it.
All hail king Zulu! The signature throw of the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club (est. 1916) is the hand painted coconut. The tradition was halted briefly in 1987 due to insurance difficulties but the next year governor Edwards signed Louisiana State Bill #SB188
, which specifically removes liability from injuries resultant from thrown coconuts.
This is a special place, y'all.
Endymion! Where they throw til it hurts. Over 3000 riders chuck an estimated 15 million parade throws along the route. Some of the beads get caught in the branches of the trees, and serve as decoration until they're obscured by the leaves in the spring. I bike to work along canal street and I love how, months later, on the morning after a big storm the street is littered with Mardi Gras souvenirs shaken loose. It rains beads in this town.
