My flourished bowl is glazed and out of the kiln! I have eaten from it and can attest to the fact that food tastes better in the vessel you formed from clay 😂 But in all seriousness, pottery has taught me so much
.
I approached the wheel hoping to make two huge ramen bowls, period. But it has been a trying and enriching experience. For the first time in my life, I am forced to have a hobby, to play and have fun
.
I soon realized that I have never had a hobby. I danced, then began training professionally and competing. I played the piano and accordion, then began performing. I wrote, earned the honor of Master Penman, and taught. Unlike the crafts I have come to know through long continuous hours, I cannot practice pottery to my heart’s content. I do not have a pottery wheel at home and can only practice once a week in the studio. I am not very good at relaxing into my slow progression
.
But God knew I needed this! I still fight the urge to cringe when class time is up but I am learning very slowly, to be in the moment, to patiently embrace the sweetness of delayed gratification, to recognize the power and relationship my fingers and palms can have with the earth. It is humbling to be on the wheel, and wrestle with pounds of fine grains that make up the world we live in, failing often, sighing often, smiling often. I set out to shape the earth but I was being shaped all along
