One year ago, a man picked me up from work for a date. We walked the busy streets of New York City uptown to Bryant Park, where we shared one of our first dates.
One year ago, I sat in one of those iconic green chairs and talked about my work day, how nice the weather was, laughed at his silly jokes, and thought about how lucky I was to have this man in my life.
One year ago, he gave me the surprise of my life in a city of millions: he asked me to be his wife. To walk this road not behind him, not before him, but beside him. And I couldn’t imagine having said anything but yes.
One year later, we’ve shared moments of the highest mountain tops and the lowest valleys. We’ve been there to lift the other up when taking one step feels like the hardest thing to do. We’ve been the biggest cheerleaders, the best tear wipers, and the strongest heart protectors.
Six months from today, I will stand before God, family, and friends to declare my love for this man. To promise to choose love among the hard, the low, the boring, and the worst days. To put in the work that love demands. To be his equal, his partner, his wife. To be silent when words aren’t needed, and to speak Truth into his life. And above all else, to always call him home.
