From a friend.
“This year marks 3 years since i found a lump that changed the course of my life. Anyone who has had a diagnosis will be able to tell you the details of how it all unfolded for them. For me it was a wednesday morning, I'd had the pest control done the previous day, one of my oldest friends from Townsville had visited me from the day bofore, the last state of origin game for 2015 was being played in brisbane. I cannot however tell you who won, because life gets a little blurry after that.... I didn't know anyone on the coast who had cancer, I had a 7yo, 4yo and a 20 month old, no family around, I was numb, scared, I needed sleeping tablets, particularly in that week it took to see how far the cancer had spread. During the next 5 months, i had a few offers of people giving me numbers of their friends who I had cancer previously and who I may want to talk to them. I felt paralysed and could never make contact.
I called the cancer council about 5 times and each time i hung up before anyone answered. The Gold coast didn't even have a McGrath Nurse! I finally tracked one down to the PA Hospital in Brisbane, and I'm still waiting to hear back from her to this day.
I found boob buddies 5 months after my diagnonis. I wished so hard that I had found Barb Wood when I was first diagnosed. I didn't have to go anywhere to see her, she came to my house, she visited me in hospital, she's met my family, my kids love her.
You see cancer is sneaky, it messes with your mind, it will make you feel things you never thought you would, and if you don't have some one to help deal with those things.... well just trust me that it's no way to live out the rest of your life. There are many things a cancer patient needs, but mostly they need to feel that they are being heard, that they are more than their disease, and when it's too scary to think about the future, that they aren't different to anyone else and that all that anyone has is TODAY.
Boob buddies provides a very unique service and I'm forever grateful that I found this charity. I'm now paying it forward because I believe in this charity so much.” #cancer #breast #women #young #mothers #wives
