19. You do make friends with salad! .
Animal agribusiness is potentially the biggest contributor to green house gas emissions (remember the fart tax anyone?), it is one of the main reasons why the rain forest is being cut down so dramatically (for space for animals and crops to grow their food), why so many rivers and lakes are polluted and unswimable, let alone drinkable, and why the soil is so depleted of nutrients (life cycle is disrupted). .
We could obviously blame the farmers for not having better farming practices, as they definitely could, but when it comes down to it, it’s all supply and demand. The people want meat, the farmers and shops will provide it. .
I can’t find any stats for Aussie or NZ (please share if you do!) but if everyone in America went vegetarian for one day a week, it would be the equivalent of taking 5 million cars off the road and would save around 10,000L of fresh water per person per day! Your short showers are helping preserve water, but eating less meat helps even more!
There are soo many reasons as why eating less meat is Marching for Team Earth - human health, climate change, animal cruelty, saving the rain forest, preserving fresh water - but if you can start with meat free Monday’s, or weekday vegetarian, or vegan before 6, or what ever gets you excited.
If you need some added inspiration I’d highly recommend watching Cowspiracy as it really focuses on the effects of animal agribusiness on climate change. ✌🏼
