NASA- Johnson space center
Did you know?
As a joke following Apollo 13's successful splashdown, Grumman Aerospace Corporation pilot Sam Greenberg (who had helped with the strategy for re-routing power from the LM to the crippled CM) issued a invoice for $400,540.05 to North American Rockwell (manufacturer of the service module) for "towing" the crippled ship most of the way to the Moon and back. The figure was based on an estimated 400,001 miles (643,739 km) at $1.00 per mile, plus $4.00 for the first mile. An extra $536.05 was included for battery charging, oxygen, and an "additional guest in room" (Swigert). A 20% "commercial discount," as well as a further 2% discount if North American were to pay in cash, reduced the total to $312,421.24. North American declined payment, noting that it had ferried three previous Grumman LMs to the Moon (Apollo 10, Apollo 11 and Apollo 12) with no such reciprocal charges. #apolloprogram #projectapollo #apollo13 #moon #jimlovell #fredhaise #jackswigert #space #saturn5 #commandmodule #lunarmodule #lostmoon #flight #aviation #universe #universetoday #flight #houstonwehaveaproblem #luna #nasa #kennedyspacecenter #johnsonspacecenter #awesome #aviationdaily #aviationlovers
I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use. // Galileo Galilei
I was so inspired by our trip to NASA. Humans are amazing. There is nothing we can't do. Between this tour and obsessively watching the Olympics - my faith in us is restored. In the midst of all our fighting and all the anger, at our core we are truly incredible. Let's work to remember the things that keep us inspired, the amazing things we have done and how to keep pushing toward what's next. We are going to be ok. #nasa #johnsonspacecenter #whatsnext
The Johnson Space Center was incredible. You guys, we actually got to see the Mission Control Room, and sit in the viewing room (original seats, yo!) I had no idea that was even available, so it was a great treat! There were all kinds of original things on display (THE helmet & gloves, landing pods, etc), a rock from the moon we could touch, and a shuttle piggybacked in a 747, both of which we could tour. The entire campus felt like it was stuck in the 60’s, and my history-loving heart loved every minute of it. #dayinhouston #johnsonspacecenter #Apollo13 #and1112and17werecooltoo
We were so blessed to go on a tour of the Johnson Space Center with the best tour guide possible.
1. My great uncle Milton standing next to a picture of him from almost 50 years ago actually making history as a MASS flight director.
2. HISTORIC mission control. The room in which the first and last words from the moon were spoken. The room in which Uncle Milton went to work every day. The room in which they brought homthe boys from #apollo13
3. My cutie family. ❤️❤️
4. An ACTUAL piece of #apollo13
. No big deal. It has just been in OUTER SPACE
5. Replica of the Lunar Module. Made of mylar and unusable in Earth's gravity.
6 & 7. Uncle Milton teaching us about the Apollo missions. Because he was #intheroomwhereithappened
8. Mock-up of the international space station for training and development. Parts of the ACTUAL space station (model in top right of photo) designed in part by Milton himself.
