I am not the only man to seek his fortune far from home, and certainly I am not the first. Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept. As ordinary as it all appears, there are times when it is beyond my imagination. - Jhumpa Lahiri, 'Interpreter of maladies' . . . . . . . . A couple exchange unprecedented confessions during nightly blackouts in their Boston apartment as they struggle to cope with a heartbreaking loss; a student arrives in new lodgings in a mystifying new land and, while he awaits the arrival of his arranged-marriage wife from Bengal, he finds his first bearings with the aid of the curious evening rituals that his centenarian landlady orchestrates; a schoolboy looks on while his childminder finds that the smallest dislocation can unbalance her new American life all too easily and send her spiralling into nostalgia for her homeland… Jhumpa Lahiri’s prose is beautifully measured, subtle and sober, and she is a writer who leaves a lot unsaid, but this work is rich in observational detail, evocative of the yearnings of the exile (mostly Indians in Boston here), and full of emotional pull and reverberation. . . . . . . . . I loved reading these stories, they are so nuanced, subtle and so original. I wrote a detailed blog post and I will leave a link to it in bio.
#inotherwords #jhumpalahiri #français #learnfrench #unjourjereviendrai #francophone #francophile

Another one I have borrowed from my sister. Another holiday read. I have read the ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ series of short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri (which I loved and subsequently bought to keep) but never ‘Interpreter of Maladies’. The blurb says ‘the elegant stories tell the lives of Indians in exile, of people navigating between the strict traditions they’ve inherited and the baffling New World they must encounter every day.’ Strikes a chord already... #jhumpalahiri #interpreterofmaladies #bookstagram
#24in48 #HourNine HOUR 9: check in! . I finally started! I got 1 hour and 15 minutes under my belt so far! It’s sad how little I’ve actually read due to exhaustion, but at least I’m reading! . This splendidly beautiful work by #JhumpaLahiri is a fascinating tale about the emotional, ideological and cultural differences within the lives of the #GangulyFamily , particularly the unassuming patriarch #Ashok , the soulful #Ashima and their #firstgeneration American children, especially their son #Gogol / #Nikhil . Published originally in #TheNewYorkerMagazine in #2003 , #TheNamesake is set in #Calcutta , #Boston and #NewYorkCity .
«It was not in my nature to be an assertive person. I was used to looking to others for guidance, for influence, sometimes for the most basic cues of life. And yet writing stories is one of the most assertive things a person can do. Fiction is an act of willfulness, a deliberate effort to reconceive, to rearrange, to reconstitute nothing short of reality itself. Even among the most reluctant and doubtful of writers, this willfulness must emerge. Being a writer means taking the leap from listening to saying, “Listen to me.”» | Jhumpa Lahiri. 🌺🍃 • I know I’ve shared this quote before, but reading The Namesake has made me want to revisit some of Lahiri’s interviews and essays. I identify so much with these words, especially right now. Remember that job at an educational NGO I interviewed for? Well, I got it! I have two part times now: one as a writer and one as a psychologist. Sometimes I don’t trust myself enough, but right now I feel pretty confident about who I am and the things I want. Like Lahiri, I’m finally learning to say: listen to me. I’m excited for what these new opportunities might bring. Finally finding balance, stability and my own space here in Lima, in terms of my career. Migrating is such an ambivalent and challenging experience, but little by little things fall into place. Happy Friday, guys ❤️🍃

🌟🌟🌟Friday Book Rec🌟🌟🌟 I really looove short stories! Needless to say that I like to read short story collections. Jhumpa Lahiri is a truly masterful short story writer and today's book rec is devoted to her marvellous Interpreter of Maladies. 💉💉💉 There is a special feeling to reading Jhumpa. Her language is simple, yet beautiful. Her stories progress slowly, quietly, suck you in, until they kind of pop beautifully at the end, leaving you in awe and wanting to read more. 💉💉💉 The short stories in Interpreter of Maladies, like most of Jhumpa's writing, deal with Indian-American experiences, Immigration and, like all good writing, are universal in their peculiarity. 💉💉💉 What fascinates me is how all formerly-colonized countries seem to share certain traits. A lot of what Jhumpa describes reminds me of Egypt and I think those similarities are post-colonial relics. 💉💉💉 I highly recommend reading anything by Jhumpa Lahiri, but especially her short stories (she published a second short story collection called "Unaccustomed Earth). 💉💉💉 . . . #goodreads #bookrecommendations

Jhumpa Lahiri - Interpreter of Maladies. “Eventually I took a square of white chocolate out of the box, and unwrapped it, and then I did something I had never done before. I put the chocolate in my mouth, letting it soften until the last possible moment, and then as I chewed it slowly, I prayed that Mr. Pirzada’s family was safe and sound. I had never prayed for anything before, had never been taught or told to, but I decided, given the circumstances, that it was something I should do. That night when I went to the bathroom I only pretended to brush my teeth, for I feared that I would somehow rinse the prayer out as well. I wet the brush and rearranged the tube of paste to prevent my parents from asking any questions, and fell asleep with sugar on my tongue.”

I am not the only man to seek his fortune far from home, and certainly I am not the first. Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept. To me handwashing dishes can be a calming experience. Concentrating on only this simple task, makes my brain happy. I got a dish washing tip in a Jhumpa Lahiri short story some years ago. The father in the story, put all dishes in the kitchen sink and scrubbed them with soap, not using much water, before finally rinsing soap off of all the dishes in one go. I sort of made this my habit, just adding stacking the dishes on a towel next to the sink, before drying them. #jhumpalahiri #teatowels #byhand #rosenbergcph
For a while now (maybe my whole life) I’ve felt pressured to focus on one thing at the exclusion of all other things. When I was eight I showed up to school career day as a painter, because I was already earning money painting commissions for family members and my mom’s friends (mostly of their dogs). In high school I focused on fine art and initially went to college to study photography, but switched to creative writing. Writing and books are still a huge part of my life, but so are clothes. My mother taught me to sew when I was young, I had formal training in high school, and for the past three years I’ve been sewing for myself. When I started selling clothes at the Back Alley Market a lot of people who knew me didn’t know that I was also a seamstress, and it’s partly because I wasn’t fully owning it and partly because a lot of my identity was tied to books. I definitely had a blip of imposter syndrome before the pop up, and I had to remind myself that it’s okay to be an AND — a writer and a designer. I wasn’t even conscious of how I’d been programmed to believe that successful creatives had to do one thing really well. There are plenty of people who thrive there but I bought into it for years and it burned me out. . There’s something really freeing about balancing more than one title, identity, or role. I tend to get a bit bored if I’m immersed in the same creative outlet for too long, so switching from the keyboard to the sewing machine and back again helps me stay engaged and inspired. It’s also great to not depend on one thing for income, because it allows me to take more creative risks. If writing was 100% my income, I’d probably take on clients that didn’t excite me just to pay the bills. Likewise, if designing and sewing were my only source of income, I’d probably feel the need to create a traditional line every six months and that sounds exhausting to me (I seriously admire those who do). So here’s to the &people! Keep bouncing back and forth between all the modalities. I see you out there. . . . #currentlywearing #memade #slowfashion #bookstagram #clothing #books #jhumpalahiri
Amazing how fast you can read when half the book is in a language you can't speak. . Jhumpa Lahiri wrote IN OTHER WORDS in Italian, and the original is on the left-hand pages. It's been translated into English by Ann Goldstein on the right. It's interesting looking to the left side as I read, picking out words here and there. . . . . . . #amreading #jhumpalahiri #inotherwords #booksintranslation #essays
Discovered a cozy and delicious coffee shop near my job. I was looking for a place to drink a cup of coffee and read a few pages of my book during lunch, and this one is perfect. Now let me go and spend some time with Lahiri and her powerful words 🙏🏼🌺🍃 • «Do yourself a favor. Before it’s too late, without thinking too much about it first, pack a pillow and a blanket and see as much of the world as you can. You will not regret it. One day it will be too late.»
It would be sheer ineptitude to underestimate Indian writers. . . . . #jhumpalahiri #thenamesake #bookstagram

Thank you @blackfoxcoffeeco for a yummy Ethiopian flat white with oat on a dreary day ☺️ And happy 2nd anniversary~ And a thank you Jhumpa Lahiri for being such a wonderful writer and writing about the raw emotions and processes of learning and immerse oneself in another language. Anyone trying to learn another language or become fluent in one that is not your mother tongue or native language should read this book~
So, who is the absolute worst at keeping up a book buying ban? It's me! 🙋‍♀️ I mean, yikes, but also, you can't put me in a room with a view of Blackwell's and literally around the corner from an Oxfam bookshop and expect me not to cave. So far I've managed to avoid the Waterstones 200m down the road, but that might change, especially considering that I know & love it. This is made even worse by the fact that I've finished only one book since I got here (Queer: A Graphic History), but at least I will have the flight home and some stopover hours to catch up a little. Have you read any of the books on here?

When Jhumpa Lahiri gives you back to yourself. (Just replace “word” with “book” and that’s how I feel.) “Sometimes a word can provoke an odd response. One day, for example, I discover the word claustrale (cloistered). I can guess at the meaning, but I would like to be certain. I’m on a train. I check the pocket dictionary. The word isn’t there. Suddenly I’m enthralled, bewitched by this word. I want to know it immediately. Until I understand it I’ll feel vaguely restless. However irrational the idea, I’m convinced that finding out what this word means could change my life. I believe that what can change our life is always outside of us.” #nowreading #bookstagram #instabook #currentlyreading #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookworm #bookcover #booklover #book #igreads #bookish #jhumpalahiri #latteart #coffeegram #coffeetime #cupertino #redvelvetlatte
Slowly but surely I am progressing with this one. It is such a beautiful feeling when you have not read one of your favorite authors for a long time, and then grab a new book by them and just feel connected to the words. Reading is such an intimate experience, and the more you read the same writers, the more you get to know them and appreciate their work. This novel confirms my love for Jhumpa Lahiri. When it comes to the Indian-American experience, no one writes like her. I will continue to share her writing on this blog, and everywhere else possible. 🌺🍃 • «When she calls out to Ashoke, she doesn’t say his name. Ashima never thinks of her husband’s name when she thinks of her husband, even though she knows perfectly well what it is. She has adopted his surname but refuses, for property’s sake, to utter his first. It’s not the type of thing Bengali wives do. Like a kiss or caress in a Hindi movie, a husband’s name is something intimate and therefore unspoken, cleverly patched over. And so, instead of saying Ashoke’s name, she utters the interrogative that has come to replace it, which translates roughly as “Are you listening to me?”»

Another great book store i stumbled upon during my US travels is Tin Can Mailman in Arcata, California. Definitely go there if you’re around, it is amazing. Bf and i were going to quickly stop by on our way to dinner, but ended up spending a lot more time than expected. It was bigger than it looked on the outside, and it had all the (used) books i want to read. All the writers i had forgotten and now remembered. It really was an enjoyable and inspiring visit. Two of my precious finds: Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri and The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi. More on those in later posts. Oh, and thank you @tincanmailmanusedbooks for that cool bookmark!
THE NAMESAKE by Jhumpa Lahiri lingered on my backlist for far too long. Finally, I bit the bullet and pulled Lahiri's debut novel off my shelf and began to read. Immediately, I found THE NAMESAKE riveting and was swept away by the story. It begins with an Indian couple immigrating to the U.S. and starting their family. By a series of strange circumstances, they name their son Gogol, after the father's favorite Russian authors. For his entire life, Gogol carries the weight of his namesake, which he feel represents something he finds uncomfortable about his identity. ⠀ .⠀ I loved the complex story Lahiri weaves as we follow the course of Gogol's life and watch as he grapples with his feelings about being "Gogol," the child of immigrants, and an Indian-American. Lahiri's prose is razor sharp, not a single word out of place. And her insights into the life of her characters, and how she portrays the nuances of their feelings, illustrates why her writing solidifies her as the best of the best. I can't wait to get to Lahiri's other work, but at the same time, part of me wants to linger on this heartbreaking story about a young man coming to terms with his own identity. The Namesake is sure to take its place on my shelves as one of my favorite novels. . ⠀ . ⠀ . ⠀ . ⠀ #thereadingwomen #readwomen #womenwriters #JhumpaLahiri #thenamesake #recommendedreading #mustread #weneeddiversebooks #books #reading #booklover #igreads #booklove #bookporn #bookstagram

This is what I call a perfect morning: a cup of black coffee, a great book and my puppy 🤗🌺🍃 • This first week of work has kind of kicked my butt. I need to get used to not being home all day. I’m not great at managing my free time. Those of you who have very busy lives and still manage to blog great content, do you have any tips for this lady? • Also, my next read will be The Namesake, by Jhumpa Lahiri. Can’t wait to share my thoughts on this one, since it is the first novel that I read by Lahiri. You know I love her stories and essays, so let’s see how this one goes ❤️.
One of my favorite books about the immigrant experience in the US is The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. I also watched the movie and was pleased that it didn't stray too far from the text. Do you know any movies that stayed faithful to the original book version? Please share in the comments! 🙂
