Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Being a massive #LucBesson
fanboy I had high hopes for Valerian
For those who don't know the background Valérian is a popular french comic series started in the late 1960's that ran for over 40 years. Written by
and drawn by #JeanClaudeMezieres
In the 28th century Valerian and his partner Laureline keep the peace in the space city, Alpha. They must unravel the mystery of why Alpha is being destroyed from the inside out?
The styling, implementation and creativity is of the highest standards. But the cast ranges from average, to mediocre, to campy! The story meanders to the point of frustration. And my goodness it gets so boring at points.
The biggest problem with Valerian is it's late, way too late. It was a visionary piece when first published as a comic, with ideas ahead of its time. But writers, directors and artists have borrowed, honoured and plagiarised the source material for years. Luc Besson even did it himself when he used Jean-Claude Mezieres as a concept artist on #TheFifthElement
It's just not as fresh & original as it should have been☹️
