I have looked up to Navy Flyers as role models my entire life. Everyday, I stand in awe of their resolute discipline, commitment, fierce spirit, bravery, and natural born leadership ability. Moreover, Major Jeff Mullins, United States Navy Blue Angel #3
, shared with me that the most important characteristic of any pilot is humility. I truly believe that this attribute is the single most defining characteristic of a naval aviator. The humble nature of naval aviators who make up an elite group of flyers is what makes them the best aviators. The inherent dangers in naval aviation demand these pilots to constantly look for ways to professionally and personally grow, learn and improve themselves since there is no room for compromise.
Michael Barger, former TOPGUN Chief Flight Instructor, explained to me: “It was this commitment to being a little better today than I was yesterday that allows me to say that although there is no way to know for certain, I am sure that there were a handful of days where I was the best fighter pilot in the world. If that isn’t something worth working for, I don’t know what is.” The commitment to maintain this humility and strive for excellence as exhibited by all naval aviators is what pushes me to work diligently and daily improve myself in hopes of one day being able to call myself a Navy Flyer. There is no more awe-inspiring profession in the world than that of Navy pilots. Sometimes, I can’t believe such a cool job exists. I have the deepest admiration and respect for anyone with wings of gold and thank them for the sacrifices they have made in their selfless service to this Nation.
