A ribbed arch done right⠀ ...⠀ A view of the Ganesh Pol gate arch from below. The crew of B-17F-10-BO “Memphis Belle” (324th Bomb Squadron, 91st Bomb Group) celebrating returning from their final combat mission (25th total) over Europe on May 19, 1943. The Belle was one of the first B-17s in service with the U.S. Army Air Force during the Second World War to complete all of its 25 combat missions without the loss of a single crew member, during which time she shot down eight German fighters. The bomber and her crew were subsequently brought back to the United States where they campaigned for War Bond sales. The original “Memphis Belle” aircraft has been in pretty bad shape for the past 75 years, but just this past week she was officially revealed and put on permanent display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio after an extensive 13-year restoration project that began in 2005. If you’re in the area, go check her out!

Their Royal Highnesses Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex (left) and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (right) are shown in this image taken on the day of their wedding as they share a loving moment shortly after they were officially wed as husband and wife. Image taken on the steps of St. George's Chapel, in Windsor Castle, in Windsor, England. May 19th 2018. On that date, Meghan became one of at least fifteen Americans who married into a royal family. Examples of an American becoming a part of a royal family are legendary actress Grace Kelly's marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956, Lisa Halaby's marriage to King Hussein of Jordan in 1978, and also Sarah Butler's marriage to the Iraqi Crown Prince and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid bin Ra'ad in 2000, even though Iraq is ironically no longer a kingdom and Zeid is actually from Jordan. Perhaps the most famous example was an American by the name of Wallis Simpson, who had married into the British Royal Family in 1937 to the former King Edward VIII, who literally abdicated the British throne after less than a year as king and took the title Duke of Windsor in order to marry Simpson, as the British government was completely against the marriage due to her status as a divorcée from two previous marriages. ________________________________ #royalwedding #history #princeharry #meghanmarkle #dukeofsussex #duchessofsussex #british #greatbritain #unitedstates #england #britishhistory #ushistory #historiansunion #united_historians #historicphotography #historyphotos #historybuff #historynerd #youcannotcensorhistory

This disturbing image taken in New York City and discovered on an ISIL internet chat forum in November of 2017 depicts an unidentified man's hand holding a cell phone that has a screensaver of the ISIL black flag on it as the famed One World Trade Center building, which replaced the destroyed Twin Towers, is purposefully shown in the background. Image taken somewhere alongside West Street, in the Hudson River Park area of New York City. Circa September 2017, exact date unknown. Horrifically this image was taken on the street where on October 31st 2017, just one month later, ISIL supporter and terrorist Sayfullo Saipov ran over nineteen cyclists and runners, killing eight. Saipov's terror attack was the deadliest on the city of New York since the horrific events of September 11th 2001, which killed thousands in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. The image shown here was among some that depicts an unidentified ISIL supporter who was taking pictures of iconic New York locations, with one other image showing him wearing a mask with the ISIL logo just outside of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Despite an ongoing investigation by the NYPD, the identity of this man and his ultimate motives for posting such an unnerving photo both remain unknown. ____________________________________________________#wariniraq #isil #isis #newyorkcity #september11th2001 #ushistory #war #history #warhistory #historiansunion #united_historians #waragainstisis #waragainstisil #warphotography #warphotos #combat #soldiers #historybuff #historynerd #youcannotcensorhistory
The Ferrari 125 S was the first vehicle produced and built by automaker Ferrari of Modena, Italy. Although preceded by Enzo Ferrari's Auto Avio Costruzioni 815 of 1940, the 125 S was the first vehicle to bear the Ferrari name when it debuted on May 11, 1947 at the Piacenza racing circuit. Like the 815, it was a racing sports car, but unlike its Fiat-powered 8-cylinder predecessor, the 125 S featured a V12 engine (the "125"), a trait it shared with most Ferrari cars of the following decades. The 125 S was replaced by the 159 S later in 1947. #enzo #ferrari #thepetersen #petersenmuseum @petersenmuseum #thehistorywire #historynerd #historic #historybuff #historyinpictures #historical #historylover #history

General Washington's headquarters. It's also called the Isaac Potts House after the original owner. Isaac Potts was a Quaker who ran the local grist mill. He had the house built near the Schuylkill River from 1768 to '70. Being such a pivotal era for America, Potts was a patriot completely devoted to the cause. Supposedly, he was one of the men who ran the the forge (for which Valley Forge is named after) making war munitions for the Continental Army and local militia. Interestingly, however, Mr. Potts was not the one who rented his home to General Washington. At the time, the current tenant of the house was a woman named Deborah Hewes and, she was the one who Washington paid for the use of the house. Washington and his wife Martha lived in the Potts House from Christmas Eve 1777 to June 18, 1778. As the above name implies, the house was not just his home during this time, but it was also where the majority of his military planning occurred. It is a beautiful home. With a few modern amenities, I wouldn't mind living there! . . . . . . . . . . . . . #washington #washingtonsheadquarters #headquarters #georgewashington #generalwashington #valleyforge #valleyforgepark #schuylkillriver #theforge #americanrevolution #revolutionarywar #americanhistory #history #historynerd #historygeek #historybuff #historylover #historyisnow #historymakers #historymaker #historyclass #historymade #historyrocks #historylesson #historygram #realhistory #realhistorylesson #knowyourhistory #reenstagram #reenstimemachine

He appeared unimpressive and a shabby soldier sitting up on the hill in his shirtsleeves. He had carelessly left undone. A black felt slouch hat was pulled low over his eyes and a cigar stuck out of his mouth as he worked with his penknife at the pile of sticks near his dusty boots. Except for the three stars on his shoulder straps, Grant easily could have been mistaken for an old farmer, down on his luck, reduced to wearing secondhand army clothes, and the outfit of a private at that! They all looked up the hill and started to laugh. One reporter stopped and chuckled saying I know him. "That's General Ulysses S Grant. The highest rank soldier in the army all of which he commands ---east, west, north, and south... " #historybuff #americancivilwar #1861

On this day in history, May 30th 1927, Charles Lindbergh takes off in the Spirit of St. Louis from Roosevelt Field on Long Island to complete the first solo non-stop transatlantic flight. The first successful transatlantic flight was performed by two British aviators in a modified Vickers Vimy bomber in 1919. The pair flew a distance of 1,890 miles from Newfoundland to Ireland. New York hotelier Raymond Orteig was convinced by the secretary of the Aero Club of America to put up a prize for the first solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris. Many famous members of the flying community tried and failed. Some crashed taking off, some were killed in accidents, and others disappeared over the Atlantic. Lindbergh partnered with two St. Louis businessmen to design and build a custom plane for the flight. The Ryan Aircraft Company of San Diego constructed a fabric-covered, single-engines, high-wing monoplane for the men, and Lindbergh flew the plane from San Diego to New York. Lindbergh faced many great challenges on his 33 and a half hour flight. At some times he was just barely skimming storm clouds at an altitude of 10,000 feet, at others, he was just barely skimming the waves of the ocean at an altitude of less than 10 feet. Lindbergh was not trained to navigate by the stars and he did not have any navigational equipment aboard because he thought it too heavy. He navigated by “dead reckoning”. He made it to Paris at 10:22 pm to the welcome of an estimated 150,000 people. Once he landed, the crowd stormed his plane, dragged him out of it, and passed him around for about thirty minutes. Many pieces of his plane were broken off by souvenir hunters, but under the escort of the French military, Lindbergh and his plane made it to a hangar. For his history-making flight, Lindbergh instantly became an international celebrity, and for decades after the flight, Lindbergh did much to support and encourage the progression and development of aviation.

At the United States Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH for the B-17 Memphis Belle debut. @starkebbmutter and I had the privilege to meet Howard Hunt, a World War II veteran. He is 96 years old. He was the last commander to fly the Memphis Belle (though not in wartime just in the United States). He knew Colonel Bob Morgan too. Here Howard is wearing his original uniform that is 76yrs old! A closer look (photo is dated September 21, 1950) at one of the Il-10s abandoned at Kimpo Airfield and captured by the Americans. A Marine is seen here sitting in the rear gunner’s seat of the plane which features, on early model Il-10s, a 12.7mm Berezin UBT machine gun. Allegedly both Il-10 aircraft that were left at Kimpo by the North Koreans were found fully loaded with cannon and MG ammunition, as well as with four rockets to each plane.

Ilyushin Il-10 tail number ‘44’ as seen in both U.S. Air Force markings and its original North Korean Air Force scheme. This particular aircraft was discovered along with another (tail number ‘55’) largely intact at Kimpo Airfield when the 1st Marine Division overran it in September 1950. Both aircraft formerly belonged to the KPAF’s 57th Aviation Assault Regiment. Both aircraft were shipped back to the United States, first arriving at Cornell University on January 24, 1951 where aircraft #44 (now given the designation of T2-3000) was given a full restoration to airworthy condition. Both planes were then sent to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio where they arrived on May 8th. Aircraft #55 (T2-3001) was put into storage while it’s sibling was put through considerable flight tests. Between late June and and mid August 1951 Il-10 T2-3000 was flown eleven times for a total of 13 hours and 15 minutes, during which it was involved in one accident. While taxiing after landing on July 5th, the aircraft’s right landing wheel gave out. The resulting hiccup caused slight damage to the propeller, landing gear, and right wing. In mid-August 1951, after three months of flight tests, T2-3000 was sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland where it was subjected to various vulnerability tests. In simpler terms, the aircraft was shot up by a variety of weapons, likely all anti-aircraft.

This beautiful detail is from a 1921 wedding dress, purchased at ‘The Vogue’ in Chicago & worn by Mary P. Withers for her wedding to Clive Runnells in Lake Forest, Illinois, USA. Considered by the Chicago Tribune to be ‘among the most popular members of Lake Forest society’, Mary was an active member of many philanthropic & political groups, including the Women’s Organisation for National Prohibition Reform, an organisation of women who were in favour of temperance but opposed prohibition. Clive was the son of the president of the Pullman Car Company & went on to run the company. I selected this dress for the ‘I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot’ exhibition @chicagomuseum in 2010. Italian soldiers on Monte Grappa with Fiat-Revelli M1914 machine gun. After the Caporetto Defeat in 1917, Austro-German forces tried to take the mountain to get an advantage and march on Venice. They encountered a strong resistance and failed to take the mountain's summit. The Italian front along the Piave river was stabilized and, although the Austrians could see Venice from their positions, they would never reach it. The armed struggle atop Monte Grappa often called "Italy's Thermopylae."
