Crescent, Warrior1 and Warrior2. . . Three of the most common leg balances in a yoga practice, and yet they are probably the most confused. . . I am the type of teacher who cues, but also focuses on students "feeling a posture" because it's more important for it to be comfortable and make sense in their bodies than look like a textbook image of asana. That being said I get asked about the differences of these postures often. so here goes! . . I kept hands on hips to show neutral and open positioning. ------- Crescent- think wide athletic lunge, back heel up, deep bend in front leg, hips neutral/ forward Warrior1- narrower stance, back heel lowers, toes angle slightly, less bend in the front knee (especially with tight calves) hips neutral/forward Warrior 2- perpendicular feet, heel to heel or heel to arch alignment, hips are open to side, knee tracks over 2nd toe if possible, back thigh/hip pulls back, tailbone draws down . . #yogatutorial #yogateacher #warriorflow #Virabhadrasana3 #virabhadrasana2 #warrior3 #highlunge #crescentlunge #yogastrong #igyoga #yogadaily #namastefit #namastefitlife

||APRIL ADJUSTS with me and @kimhartwell - CRESCENT LUNGE to WARRIOR 2|| Next up in our #AprilAdjusts campaign is Crescent Lunge (Alanasana) to Warrior II (Virabhradrasana II). These are fundamental standing postures in your Hatha yoga practice, but funny things can happen in the knees, lower back & shoulders. Have a listen to the video tutorial for some of the main alignment tips, which are also highlighted below. 😊⚔️ . ✨CRESCENT LUNGE -Feet hip width apart. -Back heel lifts high. -Powerful back leg, muscles engaged (glutes, hamstrings, quads, calves). -Tailbone lengthens, low ribs pull in (core/bandhas are ON!). -Chest opens, as upper back muscles engage. -Roll arm/biceps backwards & engage to fingertips, feel shoulder blades wrap round rib cage. -Front knee points forwards but not past the toes. 👉🏼If straight back leg causes flaring of lower ribs & hyperextension in the lumbar spine, bend the knee until you can find a neutral low back again, feeling a strong core connection around the lower torso. ✨WARRIOR II From crescent lunge, two controlled movements: back heel grounds down (foot facing front-diagonal), & arms open parallel to floor. -Back leg strongly engages to protect knee from dropping in. -Tailbone stays long, don’t stick your bum out! -Spine upright, not tilting forwards or in an arc shape - use your obliques. -Torso & hips face the side, with low ribs pulling in, only the head & gaze is forward. 👉🏼DO NOT allow front knee to drop in - normally because groin is tight or engagement lacking in the abductors (outside thigh muscles). -Take feet wider apart instead (widthways) or slightly shorter stance (lengthways) to reduce stretch intensity & maintain good knee/ankle alignment - that’s more important than sinking deeper. . Follow along with the tutorial video, and be sure to make any of the adjustments we’ve suggested, based on your body today. 🧚‍♀️💥 🗝Day 2️⃣5️⃣ of #OpenSesame with @cyogalab 🔁 #HeadToAnkle variation with back knee down 🗝💥🧚‍♀️ For today’s pose, we’re going to remove any arm balance and simply continue to work into the hips with the eventual goal of getting the leg behind the head. This pose is actually one of my favorites and although I’m showing it with the back knee down, you could also play around with keeping the back knee up. The knee down version provides more stability and takes away having to worry about keeping the back leg engaged so that we can focus 100% on the front hip… however, there is less space to actually get your head under the leg if you felt the need to go for it. With the back knee up, you’ll have to work for the balance and stability, but there will be more space to slide the head under the leg. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let’s begin in a #HighLunge stance with the left leg in front making sure that the spine is long. In order to create some extra space in the hip, one of the things I like to do before settling into this pose is reach out toward the top right corner of the mat keeping the belly pulled in and chest up. Once I find my max length, I will ‘swing’ my upper body toward the left and land with my left shoulder making contact with the left leg as the right knee comes down. Once you’re here, you can really begin to work into the left hip. You should always think about creating more length… so rather than trying to quickly get your shoulder under your leg, focus more on coming forward. This will help us create the space needed to pass the left shoulder under the leg and bring the head down to the ankle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If the head-to-ankle with the back knee down feels super comfortable, lift the back knee off the ground and tiptoe the back foot in toward the front foot (less distance between the legs means the hips go higher) and redo the same exercise with the intention of passing the head underneath the ankle. sankalpa is intention. it is a commitment. since it’s #motivationmonday i have a sadhana for this week. my sadhana is to not disparage anyone or anything. no negative speech. which seems fairly easy at first sweep but i know that i will slip up. i’m not an experienced yogi or ‘senior’ yoga teacher because i’ve mastered the practice. ha! nope. my ‘skill’ has come from diligently practicing the ethical principles of yoga philosophy as best i can over a long period of time (abhyasa). this has pushed me to get more and more honest over the years. the practice will do that for you over time. it has not only brought up deep and sometimes painful truths about my own character defects (karma) but has unearthed the courage required to meet myself in those cringe worthy spaces and forgive, heal and re-organize those parts of my psyche that are limiting me and often holding my freedom hostage. i do the work (when i feel like it and when i don’t) and let the truth reveal itself to me at a divine and holy pace that is not mine (vairagya). i just have to keep going and the intention becomes more clear as i mature and grow into this practice. if i stay humble and open, i have found that the benefits are beyond my greatest hopes and dreams. i do the work because i’m genuinely interested in freedom. i’ve lived through the cost of hiding and i’m unwilling to pay the price anymore. yoga asks me to get honest (abhyasa) and be brave (vairagya). these are the 2 pillars of the practice. if you’d like to join me for this sadhana of no disparagement say so below or tag a friend to help you on accountability and join in. report back and let me know how it’s going ill respond to everyone 💕
