[10 Years of the MCU]
Captain America: Civil War
(Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo, 2016)
Finally, Phase Three. With this starting the current phase which we are on in these films, it showed a sense of expansion, focus and more cohesion. While still experimenting on new characters and ideas, the filmmaking and storytelling aspect only improved in my opinion. And this film showed that with balance, one that could only have been done by the Russo brothers directing. After making a great Captain America film with The Winter Soldier, this now became an exemplary work to represent the MCU, and *somehow topped with Infinity War. The more serious tone of this one pits the heroes we love against one another in a struggle that comes from within and makes sense. With deep cracks in the team, buried, unspoken, and lingering. Forces of loss, guilt, vengeance, rage, loyalty, and the greys in between. The first time I watched it I had mixed feelings because I expected the Civil War from the comics, which is one of the best and my favourite crossover events. Because this promised to be that, I realized it borrowed and adapted the setting and iconic imagery from it. It delivered in an unexpected way, with rules made by this cinematic universe, instead of forcing in aspects that don't belong. A smaller, more personal story for the equally smaller roster of characters. Because they knew well enough that making this even more character based would make it a stronger film, as the attachment and development of them is the primary reason the fans keep coming back for more. Expectations aside, it works so well and is one of the most emotional ones for me. To have this divide the core members in such a way that hurts so much, and right before Infinity War is what makes the stakes as strong as they are. The impact is all over the course and the outcome of Inifinity War. Cap, you're a beautiful and flawed human, and your movies each got better.
