< Castle in The Sky > 天空之城 < Castle in The Sky > tells a story about Sheeta, who fell from the sky in the beginning of the movie and then caught by Pazu. Soon, Pazu finds out that Sheeta was actually the heir of “Laputa”, which is an ancient civilization floating on the sky and used to dominate the World due to its superior weapon and technology. Pazu also realized that she’s being chased by pirates, armies and secret agents who were trying to find the location of “Laputa” either for good and bad reasons and she’s their only key. And the later story was basically about who getting there first.
This movie is in my opinion the most child-friendly anime made by Hayao Miyazaki. Although, the plot is quite vague and simple, it does have some redeeming qualities to it. When watching this, I felt it quite enjoyable. In my review of < Nausicaa and The Valley of The Wind >, I mentioned that “characters development” was the main flaw in that movie. Well, this time we actually know more about the characters；their motivations are clear；their backgrounds are shown so we actually care about them. Hayao Miyazaki did make a lot of progress making this film.
However, this is a 2-hour long movie, so it’s pretty long for something with such a simplistic plot. In my point of view, I think some of the chase scenes and action sequences that occurred in the 1st act could be removed to speed things along a bit. I think they didn’t really add anything and the story could still be told without them. I understand Miyazaki was just trying to go for a wider audience with touching on everybody. That’s good but it just gotta be the right amount.
In the end, < Castle in The Sky > is a relaxing, child-friendly and a simple adventure film. Still, it’s not the best of Studio Ghibli, but I’m giving it a B +
