This movie is quite the throwback but if you haven’t seen nor heard of “Shallow Hal” since its release in 2001, here’s the lowdown.
In summary, Shallow Hal is an egotistical businessman with a shallow heart. Hal (Jack Black) doesn’t understand the meaning of real beauty, but karma strikes when he is hypnotised into only seeing people, women specifically for their inner beauty.
Sounds simple enough until you realise that this ‘inner beauty’ turns every woman he sees into a thin model and so despite Hal falling in love with the shy Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow), he appears repulsed by her when he’s freed from hypnotism to see she is not the thin model like woman he expected but instead is a much larger woman who throughout is deemed “ugly” and repulsive.
Having been released in 2001, it is extremely hard to believe that a movie with a body shaming issue such as this would be viewed as acceptable in today’s feminist age.
Having Hal make his recovery from shallowness only when he falls in love with a large woman under the pretences that she looks like a thin model is extremely damaging to those who are larger in body size; in the idea that a man must be hypnotised for them to be seen as beautiful.
In addition to this, Hal’s friend consistently appears sickened by the sight of larger Rosemary and she is also pictured in almost every scene as breaking chairs and eating oversized portions. What is the chance that this attitude can be a strong factor in the development in eating disorders and body issues.
If this movie was released today rather than 2001, it is highly likely that it would be severely slated and statements would be issued. Not only does the movie imply heavily that larger women are “ugly” and undesirable but at one point also insinuates that a child burns victim is also ugly and yet beautiful when he is hypnotised.
