True joy is a practice. You can’t expect to wake up every morning feeling super happy and joyful because sorry to break it to you but that isn’t going to happen and if you think it is you’ll just be disappointed. Instead, you need to work on your happiness like you work on your body with healthy eating habits and exercise. You need to work your happiness like a muscle so that it becomes easier and easier to become your default.
I used to start off my morning grumpy and “ugh” filled and you know what that did to my days, you guessed it, that bad energy would carry through to the rest of my day. So now, I make a conscious effort to start my day with gratitude. Getting grateful before my head even lifts off my pillow gets me seeing through ‘positivity glasses’ if you will and that then carries through the rest of my day.
Now this isn’t to say I don’t have off days. Just a few days ago I started my day with my usual gratitude practice but I just couldn’t get out of that crappy funk I was in. I just couldn’t shake the ‘ugh’ off. But instead of getting upset and beating myself up about it (which would have inevitably made things even worse) I forgave myself and did my best to find even small things to shift my perspective to one that looked for the good things first.
