This woman has been my trainer for over 15 years and is now my best friend. We have been down so many roads and our path keeps coming closer together. Today we had an epic session. It was so much more than physical. The work I do with my body is emotional. Whether I’m practicing yoga, dancing, sprinting, or punching the shit out of a boxing bag, I want to feel it, access my emotional body through physical effort. There lies healing. Thursday’s are my cross training day this cycle and it’s a little easier to make it happen bc I get to do it every week instead of every other week when I was running 6 days (now I just run 5 and cross train 1 - half training is pretty nice!). I’m loving the consistency of it and look forward to doing something different. I’ve always loved cycling, but jeeez it’s tough. My hips get sore and I’m not very good at the sprinting parts (hello, slow twitch marathon muscles 🙄). So I struggle, but I keep going bc it’s fun to be challenged (and I don’t feel like I completely suck at it).
I really want to take up swimming tho - we live across the street from a really nice public pool. Fun fact ☝🏼 @dualr
used to play water polo in high school and then was a lifeguard in his early 20s (soooo he’s a really good swimmer 🏊). He tried to teach me to swim last summer and sort of gave up on me bc, well, I really sucked and I hate when I suck at something so, I gave up 😂. Anyways, I’ve been begging him to take me back out again and he told me I’d have to sign up for swim lessons! Can you believe that?! 🙄
If you took up swimming later in life did you take lessons or did you just know how to do it?
*also, I know how to swim, but I don’t know how to freestyle. Like how do you breathe and kick your legs and move your arms at the same time????? It’s too much multitasking for me I think 🤔 #sendhelp #runningisbest

Ik had een paar jaar geleden echt niet gedacht (wist hier tot vanmiddag nog niks van) dat ik nu zelf op dit scherm zou verschijnen als succesvol voorbeeld. Maar wauw, ik kan echt vol trots zeggen: ik heb het gefixt! Hoe? Dat is niet in een paar woorden uit te leggen. Maar wat er zeker aan bijgedragen heeft en wat ik graag met jullie deel: is dat ik mezelf toesta om leraar en leerling tegelijkertijd te zijn. Ik neem iets aan van mensen die op bepaalde vlakken verder zijn, pas kennis toe en zet door. Ik zie veel mensen om me heen die moeite hebben met iets aannemen, “ja maar dat weet ik al, ja maar bij mij werkt dat niet, ja maar dat is niet zo waar ik werk..” herkenbaar? Waar ben je bang voor? Kun je iets ook voor waar aannemen en de kennis echt eerst laten zakken? Ga eens op zoek naar de JA-EN i.p.v. de JA-MAAR. Je mag dus nog lerend zijn én je hebt ook nu al recht van spreken. Je weet al heel veel én het is goed om je altijd leerbaar op te blijven stellen. I got my MRI results today. Impingment of the hip & a small focal tear to my anterior superior labrum.
My doctor sucks. So I called my PT, who I trust very much and know she would actually explain to me what the hell this all exactly meant.
According to her, it's a degenerative deformity and I have extra bone in my right hip. Impingment leads to the tear. And it isn't a true running related injury, just that with wear & tear and weakness, running brought it out. We think I could have had this tear now for several years because I've been dealing with this same pain off & on now for several years.
Thankfully, she knows how important running is to me and all the other work I'm doing to get stronger. So she said I didn't need to quit running. Not like I would've anyways. It's my lifeline.
I've had, I feel like, every damn injury a runner could have. I have not run one season without battling some injury. I'm getting tired of always being injured and I worry about how these decisions will affect my future, like when I'm 70. But, that's SEVERAL years in the future. And if I know one thing, living in the future isn't effective or a fun way to live.
So, I'm going to put my head down, accept it for what it is, trust in my Higher Power, train smart, and keep moving forward.
