Best bench session I've had since beginning to train for powerlifting. Still not much weight on the bar but every set was at about a 5-6 RPE. Relative to what I have been training with and able to bench this was a huge step forward for me. . . All of last prep I was benching somewhat scared and fearful because I hadn't barbell benched in so long after my pec tear and shoulder surgery. Those injuries were always buried in the back of my head causing me to lack confidence with the lift, therefor, not pushing it as hard as I could have. . . I was also over emphasizing tucking my elbows, lat tightness, and eccentric control causing me to lose stamina quick with rep work, and put my body in a less than optimal position to press a lot of weight. I developed all of these habits as protective mechanisms after the old injuries. Sob story over... Great to be feeling some confidence with bench again!

This was me almost a year ago! I was feeling so strong 💪🏻, I was strength training, HIIT cardio and 5k runs 5/6 times a week. Today is a different story. Back pained? Or want to avoid it? Want to improve your power output- how about all the above. - Back pain is much different than muscular pain, which is typical for any seasoned strength athlete. You don’t successfully push through back pain, especially when nerves are involved. It’ll stay sensitized. - I won’t lie, I’m very partial to the bird dog. Why? I feel that besides (most importantly) changing my daily movement patterns (avoiding the pain generators) that I gained more from the bird dog than any other exercise. And I’m still pain-free 5 years later without surgery. - The bird dog is a great way to build core endurance (muscular and neuromuscular), rehab a bad back or best case - prevent a back injury and of course what we all need in strength sports - a CORE, a CORE of IRON. - Back strength alone does not prevent back injury. Instead, seek to establish endurance for a bulletproof back with the bird dog, part of the 3-pronged McGill big 3. - Here, I’m guiding Dondell how to lock-in his first bird dog. This really got Blue sweating Saturday (that’s how you know you’re doing it right). Utilize these in your warmup and cool down. - The benefits are substantial. Drive the heel back to create hip extension (common major flaw is curled leg) and push the earth away with your palm to challenge the upper back more (another very common flaw). - Remember, strength athletes with heavy musculature, (like Blue) will look much different than your average joe whist dogging. The only time it’s really ever appropriate to suck in your stomach is if you’re a physique competitor practicing your vacuum pose. Every single lift you do should be prefaced by bracing your abs hard and pushing out your obliques. Even during everyday life, if you’re sucking your stomach in to look skinny then you’re probably chest breathing. All breath should fill from the diaphragm up, so unless you’re taking in giant breaths your chest shouldn’t raise up and down. Improper breathing and bracing mechanics are to blame for lots of back, neck, and even shoulder pain. @kabukistrengthlab has lots of YouTube videos on this, so if you find yourself chest breathing or can’t figure out how to properly brace your core then check those out. Or sign up for a session or two with me 😏 #Repost @syattfitness Nothing says heavy deadlifts like a mid-rep accidental dookey release. - But listen. Quick breath in. Squeeze your abs hard. Like if someone was about to punch you in the stomach. Brace for impact. Then dump freshly brewed polyjuice potion straight down the front of their cloak. - That’s how you engage your core. Brace for impact. - Dementors say sucking your belly in is better because it activates your transverse abdominis (deep core muscles). But Dementors forget ”activation” isn’t the main goal. Bracing and protecting your spine is. And sucking your belly in does the opposite. - Think of it this way. - You know those inflatable floaties muggle kids wear on their arms in the pool? - If you slide them on fully inflated, they wrap snug around your arms and keep you floating. That’s what taking a big breath in and squeezing your abs does for your spine. Braces firmly around and protects it from excessive movement. - But if you slide them on deflated, they do nothing. Your arms are inside but they don’t brace against you or make you float. That’s what sucking your belly in does for your spine. Wraps around but without enough pressure to brace or protect it. - My point? - If you want to “engage your core,” don’t suck it in. Take a deep breath and brace for impact. Seriously. Your back will feel like a million galleons and your strength will immediately increase.
