Tottenham’s run in the 1980/81 FA Cup began at 2nd division QPR with a 0-0 draw in the 3rd round, winning the replay in 3-1 at White Hart Lane. In the 4th round, we faced Hull City at home, winning 2-0 with goals from Steve Archibald and Garry Brooke.
We defeated Coventry 3-1 in the 5th round with goals from Archibald, Ardiles and Hughton before completing a relatively kind run to the semi-finals by beating Exeter City 2-0 in the 6th round; Paul Miller and Graham Roberts with the goals.
The semi-final took place at Hillsborough, where we faced Wolverhampton Wanderers. Steve Archibald gave us the lead after just 4 minutes, but Wolves immediately hit back. Hoddle scored just before half-time but a controversial 90th minute penalty secured a replay at Highbury four days later.
Despite a slight scare as Wolves hit the woodwork with the score at 1-0, Spurs secured their place in the final with goals from Crooks (2) and Villa to give us a 3-0 win. Spurs were on their way to Wembley to face Manchester City.
The final was a poor game. Tottenham couldn’t find a way through Manchester City’s physical game and we fell behind after 30 minutes. Still at 0-1, a dejected Ricky Villa was substituted after 68 minutes and 11 minutes later we got a lucky break and drew level. A free kick from Hoddle on the edge of the box was deflected into his own net by the scorer of City’s goal, Tommy Hutchinson. Extra time came and went – 1-1 at full time, and a replay.
Despite a poor display, Keith Burkinshaw kept faith with Ricky Villa for the replay, and it turned out to be a wise move. Villa opened the scoring after 8 minutes, but City equalised 3 minutes later. City took the lead with a penalty just after half-time before Crooks equalised. 2-2. With 20 minutes to go and the game there for the taking, Tony Galvin made a short pass to Villa just inside City’s half, who proceeded to go on a mazy run, dribbling through the entire City defence - twisting left, then right, and finally passing the ball into the City net for one of the FA Cup’s greatest goals – Tottenham had won the cup.
