From May 25th to June 22nd, a living legend named Kanye West released an album every week that he produced. KIDS SEE GHOSTS is one of them, and on this one Kanye teams up with close friend and long time associate Kid Cudi to make an album that would sound different from his previous albums both of 2018 and of his entire discography. This album famously received a 10/10 rating from Anthony Fantano (of The Needle Drop) and while I don't thinkit deserves a perfect score, I do think this album is great. Kanye's verses are (for the most part) consistently great and tackle some great subject matter. However, this is Kanye, so most of his otherwise solid or even great verses have clumsy refrences to sex or money that can almost ruin the verse or the song in some cases. The only outliers are Freee and Reborn. They both focus on a certain topic and execute it very well. Reborn especially is one of the most beautiful songs that I've heard that's been released this decade. Kanye has always been known to say stupid things (I should'nt need to provide any examples) but this song puts all of that into perspective in a beautiful and touching way and shows a side of Kanye that we rarely see. It truly is an experience and if you only listen to one song from this album or even from all of Kanye's albums this year, make it Reborn. Of course, the production across the the album is top notch, using clever sampling to make the production feel very fantasy-esque. This is a great album and likely the one we will remember for the longest out of any of Kanye's 2018 releases. I recommend it to anyone looking for a surreal yet comforting experience (the cover art represents this well, what with the abstract design but the warm, soothing colors). Hopefully, Kanye & Cudi will team up to make a followup to KIDS SEE GHOSTS sometime in the near future.
