DREDD(2012) - Judge.Jury.Executioner. Running a brisk 90 odd minutes, “DREDD” is in my opinion a brilliant action movie, that has some tense moments along with some cool action sequences. Its one of those underrated gems that deserve a watch and more so if you are an action movie buff... you will definitely enjoy it! While Karl Urban (The Lord Of The Rings, Star Trek) does a great job as the bad ass JUDGE DREDD, the menacing drug lord, the villainess here, is played convincingly by Lana Headey (Game of Thrones). If the first JUDGE DREDD (1995) starring Sylvester Stallone left a bland taste in your mouth, this movie surely helps you get over it by a long way... M1202N Before electronic devices children & and adults read books and comics for entertainment. In the post WW11 period there was a profusion of publications producing comic books and comic magazines. One of the iconic British publications was simply called “Eagle”. Published weekly it told in comic form of the adventures of ‘Dan Dare’ of ‘Riders of the Range’ of ‘Jack O Lantern’ and contained other articles to entertain and educate. We have at Newlyn Antiques & Cottage Garden Nursery a collection of 47 1956 and 1957 issues of ‘Eagle’. It is in newsprint format (275mm x 345mm). They are in good to very good condition, with each issue an average of 20 pages in colour and black and white. They are available for sale for $8.00 per issue.

"They want me to go to Butlins with them!" Doomlord does occasionally let its 80s roots shine through.
An alien stalks the Earth. Doomlord by Alan Grant and Heinzl. Published in 80s comic The Eagle and reprinted by @hiberniabook.
The year was 1955. The war had been over only ten years. Rationing had only just finished and many cities in Britain still had bomb craters. And yet on the shelves in the newsagents school children could buy for four and a half pence a lavish full colour, beautifully illustrated, realistically designed world of the future. Frank Hampson and his team had opened a world of exotic planets, vast space fleets, incredible voyages in the pages of Eagle comic. Over sixty years ago a standard was set in story telling illustration that has never been equaled. The children of that post war era stepped into an optimistic future of the imagination and the name ‘Dan Dare’ became part of our folklore and Frank Hampson a legend. #frankhampson #dandare #eaglecomics #sciencefiction #illustration #comics #rogueplanet #pilotofthefuture #artwork
TBH this cover isn't really selling Invisible Boy to me... #EagleComics
A dark, gritty tale, in which the intrepid space pilot Dan Dare was mind-controlled by vile aliens using his flaps. #EagleComics #DanDare #flaps
These ‘Girl Annuals’ (companion to the boys comic Eagle) are dated between 1953 and 1960. I picked them up on a glorious late summer day in the cathedral city of Ely. In fact it was a stall selling second hand books to promote the repair of the 1000 year old (one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages) cathedral. I didn't contribute much as I got all five books for £2.50. They are full of strips and prose stories to thrill the girls of postwar England. There's a spiffing tale of Queen Boudicca driving her blade-spinning chariot through Roman invaders and laying waste to Colchester as punishment for Brits choosing a passive life. Excellent role model. There's Saint Perpetua the Martyr who in the final frame faces the lions in the Roman arena. Bit disappointed it ended there but a good example of ‘stiff upper lip’ in the face of unpleasant consequences. There's also ballet schools and horse jumping and boarding school capers but I didn't bother reading them. A time capsule of the 50’s… the quiet after the storm and before swinging 60s. #girlannual #britishannual #1950s #hultonpress #eaglecomics #comics #comicstrip #illustration
