Had an intensely eerie experience along Old Dubai. My vacation was almost over when I hit this road. Only had a few dirhams left in my pocket. In a few days, I'd be flying back to Manila. Still way possible to enjoy sight-seeing and eat locally prepared food.
So, before going to Al Ras where this picture was taken, had to enjoy an Abra ride from Dubai Creek going to Festival City and vice versa. It was so cold that day and I was only wearing a thin sweater. I came unprepared. And you'd see very few people in the area. I was by myself so imagine how the feelings of excitement and uneasiness combine as I walk in an old city. Good thing I decided to save offline a blog which became my guide all through out. I even met, I think he's an American-African young man who was also travelling by himself. To my anxiousness, I now feel how unfriendly I was.
Going to Al Ras wasn't new. Been here last year and few weeks ago. But first time on my own. Hit the road, watched some folks enjoying some hot drinks on hand, mesmerizing multi-colored spices everywhere, all I felt was excitement. Didn't recogize the clock, it was two in the afternoon and the last time I had my meal was at seven.
I saw this museum-looking restaurant and enjoyed some beautifully spiced biryani and specialty icecream. This was where the fear began. After taking my late lunch, an old man approached me. It was a short talk, I didn't mind saying hello back and showing gratitude after him asking about the food experience. I hit the street with much fewer people, more streets and noticed that he was following me. I made turns thinking he'd be out of my sight but heck, he was still there. Walking in my fastest making my fear not too obvious and thanking God, I made it to Gold Souk where the crowd was.
I decided to go back home to Dubai Marina when I knew I lost his sight. What an experience. In addition to the unluck, this was also the day I lost my last dirhams and maybe, it was an obvious sign to stop exploring. .
