6 minutes. That's how long it took for a killer to prowl the hallways of his former High School and kill 17 of his former peers.
4 minutes. That's how long the High School's resource officer stood outside, armed and trained to address the threat, with no response.
19 years. That's how long it took for the killer to come to the conclusion that he would act on his plan to kill others in cold blood.
30 years. That's how long the SRO had accumulated experience and training as a Police Officer and decided he wouldn't act in accordance to that training or the sworn oath he raised his hand to before God and man.
Both the killer and the SRO have the blood of innocents on their hands and conscience. Both decided that their lives were more valuable than the lives of others. Neither deserve honor nor do they deserve to be seen as heroes. They are both cowards.
As a Law Enforcement Officer I am disgusted that someone would be so evil to take the lives of others into their hands and murder them without cause or justification.
As a Law Enforcement Officer I am disgusted that someone would be so cowardly to not take the action they have been trained and trusted to take and eliminate the threat when there was cause and justification to do so.
I love my life. I don't have a hero or saviour complex. I don't desire to die. I know the risks that come with my job. I also know the rewards. I know there are hundreds of thousands in my jurisdiction that are dependent on me and those like me to address whatever threat presents itself and attempts to cause chaos and bloodshed.
I will address whatever threat comes. Will I be fearful? Possibly. But I exist as the enforcer of the law, the protecter of the innocents, and a terror to the evil in this world. I gave up the right to stand by as evil unleashes hell upon victims. I will respond with swiftness, with accuracy, and with the appropriate amount of violence that is necessary to restore order and bring justice.
I am the Thin Blue Line between order and chaos.
