‘Bethod stepped towards him. The dead knew he did not want to. The dead knew his heart was pounding. But he stepped towards him anyway, and fixed him with his eye, and said, “You can’t kill the whole world, Logen.”’
Sharp Ends by Joe Abercrombie is a collection of short stories all set in The First Law world. By the dead did it feel good to be back in this world, to be amongst the shadiest of characters once again, and to just enjoy some more stabby stabbyness!
I’ll admit I’m not a huge fan of short stories or short fiction in general. I feel like I need a big book to sink my teeth into, and I’ve often been left unsatisfied by shorter works. Well I was definitely not left disappointed with Abercrombie, I should have known he’d never let me down! Each of these stories were just so well crafted, showcased some awesome characterisation and were also damn entertaining. There were two stories in the middle that I felt needed more development, but as the characters were familiar this didn’t spoil my enjoyment of them.
My favourite stories were A Beautiful Bastard, Made a Monster, and Two’s Company. The first two brought back some of my all time favourite characters; Glokta and Logen, but showed them in a slightly different light. I’m amazed at how well Abercrombie did this! He made me have a deeper understanding of both and gave me a glimpse of their lives before the events in The Blade Itself. I swear I could read a thousand more tales about these two and never tire of them.
Two’s Company was the most hilarious story in this collection. I found myself absolutely loving two new characters - Javre and Shev! These two were a brilliant duo, with an awesome friendship and plenty of sassy banter. Especially once Whirrun of Bligh hit the scene!
Seriously how does Abercrombie do it? How does this absolute genius introduce a new character and within a few paragraphs I’m totally hooked on them! It’s sorcery, I tell you! I’m now going to be counting down the days until 2019 and I can get my hands on his new trilogy. ⚔️
