Much ado is being made of @katyperry
and her unwanted kiss on @americanidol
Many of the people making a fuss seem to be taking aim squarely at the #MeToo
movement and frankly, their point is a valid one: if any middle aged male competition judge kissed a teenaged female contestant after she explicitly and politely explained why it was not wanted, the judge would have been fired during the commercial break. Period. Full stop.
Is it hypocritical to allow a woman like Perry to get away with it?
It wasn’t okay and Katy had no right to defy the chastity wishes of this young virgin. She didn’t, sorry. But context is important and no one arguing for her firing can say with a straight face that what happened was comparable to anything the #MeToo
movement is about.
Disclosure, I’m a fan of Perry. I’ve never bought a song, much less an album, and I’ve never been to a show of hers, but I’ll sing along when her songs come on the radio. Also loved her last performance on @nbcsnl.
Heck, she’s even on “my list” of celebrities I’d be allowed to have a “cheat pass”. But none of that matters.
Fact is, you have to keep these things simple. She asked. He said no. She did it anyway. She is not only a person of influence, but has direct power over the contestants. No means no.
