Had to stop to catch the last light in the canyon! 🌅 & clouds made for some awesome shots which I’ll post more of this week from my weekend trip back to my hometown #navajoland
Our last beautiful day on the Rez and we were blessed to be passed by ultra runner Edison Eskeets. To acknowledge the Navajo people who endured The Long Walk 150 years ago, Edison will run from Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona to Santa Fe, New Mexico, a distance of over 330 miles. He started running May 18 and will arrive in Santa Fe on June 1, 2018—the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo, which allowed the Navajo people to return to their homelands.
At Canyon de Chelly, I took the White House Ruins hike, 1 1/4 mile each way, down into the canyon to see the ruins. 1) The view from the canyon top as I started the walk down. 2) The view looking up as I approached the bottom, to the cliff top where I started. 3) The White House Ruins. What an amazing walk walking down paths carved out of the canyon walls. It wasn’t quite as much fun climbing back up again. 😊

Well, we did it!! We left late, got a flat on the way up (which my husband patched, he’s amazing), we set up camp at 9:30 at night and woke up to fresh air and birds chirping on the Navajo Nation. We hiked Canyon de Chelly, met amazing Navajo painters, jewelry makers and sandstone carving artists. We hiked the Painted Desert, and hung out till the rangers asked us to leave. We got lost and drove in a circle for two hours but got to see the vast landscape, with almost no water and almost half a million people struggling in a food desert, where 11 grocery stores serve a land area the size of North Carolina. We came. We saw. We camped. Is that a t-shirt? I need it. 💕❤️ Till next time, the Rez, has a special place in our hearts.

Horseback riders leaving the Canyon as we arrived - the historic relevance of this monument and the serenity of a 4-wheel Jeep ride though the Cottonwoods with a Navajo guide who infused our time together with her knowledge and passion made for a memorable afternoon! #canyondechelly #navajonationalmonument #horseback
