I love what Kyle D. Jones posted on Instagram today. I feel like it is a great reminder for the millennial generation and dating & relationships in modern culture today. "Love is patient. This is forgotten wisdom in modern culture." The technology boom and modern devices have sped up processes, making what used to take days, weeks, or months take hours or minutes. With automobiles and airplanes, we can make trips in hours that once took us weeks or years. With products like Uber and Instacart, we can compress daily tasks into a fraction of the time they took before. With dating apps like Bumble and Tinder, you can introduce yourself to two or three people within seconds. This has hard wired us to want instant gratification. "When you want it, you want it now." This is making us perpetually impatient.
"No one has the patience to wait for a healthy partner to come into their life. People hate being single, so they’ll settle for anything with anyone.
Also, no one has the patience to take things slow when a healthy partner does come into their life. They become clingy, have sex too soon and refuse to address red flags.
Without patience, you’re more likely to attract an unhealthy relationship. The rush of the “honeymoon phase” leads people to take the next steps in their relationship without looking at the odds of success." I think the key to coping with the way our culture has evolved and instant gratification is if you can’t deliver instant gratification, then be upfront about it. Let people know up front. “Sorry, but you’re going to have to wait.” Be transparent. Communicate. Set expectations. Tell them what you can and can't provide. If waiting doesn't work for that person or they need instant gratification, they have the choice to move on. This goes for any type of relationship whether it's a coworker, a client, a friend, a lover or a family member.
