REVIEW - Freak Show
Freak Show is a coming-of-age fish-out-of-water tale of a boy who just wants love and acceptance.
Billy is a carefree extrovert who is forced to move to his father’s when his mother (#BetteMidler
) goes travelling. His father is rich and gives him everything he wants except affection. He doesn’t fit in at his straight-laced super-homophobic new school and refuses to conform to their expectations. After he his beaten in a hate crime attack he decides to rock the boat completely by running for home-coming-queen to force those around him to just accept him for who he is and not what they want from him to be.
The hatred and intolerance in the story should be a movie clique but its scarily too real! And this film owes more to the 80's coming of age films then the new wave of movies like #LoveSimon
. I just wish it had balanced entertaining its audience with its approach to confronting the issues it often skates over. And all the religious elements were way too obvious, especially the last super lunch hall scene.
The film also doesn't always feel cohesive in its approach, themes and the message it’s trying to convey, but this can all be overlooked because of Alex Lawther's fabulously exceptional portrayal as Billy. He owns this movie and its because of him that it succeeds
English actress turned producer/director #TrudieStyler
brings together a great supporting cast of #JohnMcEnroe
Trudie has constructed, from a script based on #JamesStJames
novel, a fun film that deserves a much wider release than its getting after I saw it over a year ago in Edinburgh!
