the creative process is holy. story is sacred geometry. well-crafted story has the elegance of ecological structure and taps into some of the highest, most beautiful stuff we can access as human beings.
learning to do that is a totally practical matter. it's concrete. it can be learned. i am dedicated to giving artists the tools to demystify the creative process and to access the sacred in their work in a totally repeatable, practice-able way. these tools work. (and I know because I use em myself!)
my comprehensive online course Character Based Story Structure is only on sale thru MIDNIGHT TOMORROW. ive offered it at an insane discount this round, because I want everyone to be able to access these tools. I won't be able to offer it at this price again--so get in now. you can work the course at your own speed, and you'll have it forever--so you can use it over and over, for every project you make.
enroll now at the link in my bio.
the world needs story. and the world needs creators who have come alive. creating as much beauty, authenticity, truth and transformation as possible. now more than ever. here are the tools.

time for some writing! one of best things about a week off work: being inspired and having the time to do something about it as and when I want to ☀️
I typically like to write at the library, or the cafe, because it helps my mind when I get away from all the craziness and responsibilities at home for a little bit. Sometimes it is pretty cool, though, to just sit here with my favorite coffee mug and a background of crazy to remind me of how lucky my life is! My wife’s DIY picture frames, one daughter’s piano, one daughter’s walker, they are all a reminder that in this house you’re encouraged to do the things you enjoy because you enjoy them. You don’t need any reason more than that!

I've been writing a ton. A ton! Just not this past weekend. .
But I did have a nice weekend away reading - @turtlereaders
I'm really loving my third book. And am just soaking in all the writing of a debut novel. (Although I was introduced to Zentner's work with his second novel - Goodbye Days 💙💙💙)
My main character, Freddie, never goes anywhere without her signature red hoodie.
Have you all ever dressed up like your characters or even favorite book characters?

Happy Wednesday Writer Friends!
QOTD: What is your go to website, book, or other reference for researching titles??
So often we as fantasy writers focus on making things (especially our WIP’s titles) perfectly whimsical. But often they don’t NEED that fictional feel! Don’t get me wrong, it certainly helps, but we don’t need to bend over backwards to achieve it!
AOTD: I honestly just pick a few ideas I like the sound of, google them, and search for synonyms or words in the generally same family as what I’m looking for! Sometimes I change up a letter or two to get that “whimsical” feel, but sometimes I like what I find!
One more day till title reveal day!!!

I just finished the complete first draft of the novel I started writing on January 1 of this year. It is book 2 in a 3-book series. (I have only a very vague idea of book 3's plot at this point.) This is my 3rd novel but was was slow going compared to the other two (one in this series, which I wrote in 2017 plus my very first novel was a standalone, which I wrote in 2016). The other two novels I started & finished "writing" (not including planning or post edits) over a summer each. This was the first one I attempted to start actual writing at nights, early mornings and weekends during the semester and then into summer break. It was good and bad while doing it, but at the end I feel like this might be my best book. We will see.
Clocked in at the goal length of about 80k. Will give myself a novel writing break to clear my head, then I will get to round one editing on this one in the fall.
Also this fall, I'll be on sabbatical working on a fun nonfiction Instagram storytelling/reporting project.
And getting serious about finding an agent and also a publisher. That's a whole different kind of work!
I also have a nonfiction book and a fiction book that I've got sketched out. So probably one of those will come before book 3 of this series.
As far as edits on this book, I've already got a scene in my head for the chopping block. We'll see.
But yay!!!!!! #amwriting
“No more be grieved at that which thou hast done:
Roses have thorns, and silver fountains mud;
Clouds and eclipses stain both moon and sun...” Sonnet 35, Shakespeare
Picked up a shakespeare pocket book at @halfpricebooks
a couple weeks ago. Turns out sonnets and coffee make for a perfect morning ☕️💐📖 #shakespeare #goodmorning #coffeeandsonnets
novel critiques and developmental editing • I have openings at the end of July and the middle of August • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Developmental Editing focuses on the BIG PICTURE: the plot, the characters, and the conflict, to start. It looks at the content, not the grammar. I offer three different Developmental Editing options. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My Developmental Edit includes everything that my Critique does, such as an editor’s memo, but it also includes a more in-depth assessment of each chapter, as well as margin comments as needed throughout your manuscript, using Track Changes. I also provide you with a timeline sheet, character sheets, and resources that will help you during the next steps in the writing, revising, and publishing process. Some points that I touch on in my Developmental Edit:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The first draft of book 2 is done*. (*a semi-coherent, vaguely book-shaped crap statue in need of a MASSIVE revision, but at least it’s crap that *exists*!!) #yabooks #yawriter #amwritingya #ahhhhhh
Bit of Sunday afternoon writing. Am sooooo close to finishing this WIP. This one’s been like pulling teeth. What’s one of the hardest projects / assignment / stories you’ve ever had to complete?
