I am a person with severe depression.
What is depression?
Depression is a low mood that lasts for a long time, and affects your everyday life.
In its mildest form, depression can mean just being in low spirits. It doesn’t stop you leading your normal life but makes everything harder to do and seem less worthwhile. At its most severe, depression can be life-threatening because it can make you feel suicidal or simply give up the will to live.
Everyone’s been depressed at some point in their life but being diagnosed is a lot harder to deal with as you wake up & go to bed with it, there is no cure but only coping mechanism for this along side any other mental health issues. Sadly depression is the hardest to deal with as people who can’t cope will commit suicide, Ive lost people to it & I have been in hospital myself. Depression can really take over your life.
One thing I’ve been asked is “what do you have to be depressed about” if I knew what made me not want to get out of bed in the morning & leaves me feeling so low at night I’d sort it but I can’t. Everyone has different ways of coping with depression, I used to smoke weed, drink & bury myself in music. Now I take medication as it got worse as so did my anxiety but never pill shame! Some times it’s peoples only option, I used to throw up every day & couldn’t leave my bedroom.
How to help someone with depression :
I honestly don’t know other than please be patient! We sometimes don’t understand ourselves & it upsets us. All I can recommend is get to know what makes that person happy as for when I’m low Jordan cuddles me up & puts on a “children’s” film or show.
