Last Monday was meant to be test day at the end of GZCL but I didn’t go for it thanks to a heavy deadlift the day before. So I thought fuck it I’ll jump in with the class and build to a heavy single see how things were going post District L. 190 and 205 moved pretty fast and smooth so I loaded up 212.5kg/467lb and went for a heavy lift for a small pb. The program predicted 217 so not quite where you’d think but on tired as fuck legs I’ll take it. Close to blacking out and a massive headache after let me know I’d done enough for the day. Good times. So far this year Back squat 202.5-212.5 Front squat 170-175 (need to retest) Deadlift 240-255 Bench 152.5-160 (needs retesting) Strict press 92.5-100 For 6 months work that’s more progress than I have made in a full year over the last couple of years. And there is still much more to come. Conditioning has also gone up too. No fancy program. No fancy bullshit. Injuries are truly what show us what we are made of. It is set backs that create growth, and make us dig deep to overcome them. 💪🏼 Have you ever been injured? . Injuries I’ve endured: - sprained ankles - bruised tailbone - pulled hamstring - pulled quad - soleus tendonitis - ITBAND syndrome (the worst!) - Broken shoulder - Severe bone contusion (they told me if I fell on my shoulder again, the bone would shatter 😬) - Torn labrum - Bicep tendonitis 😩 Recently, I’ve been asked about injuries a lot, and I realized that back in August of 2017 when I had my worst injury to date - broken shoulder, torn labrum, severe bone contusion - I didn’t post a lot, but did a lot more InstaStories. So, save this one... . Injuries are TOUGH. But, they do not break you. I broke my shoulder 10 days before IRONMAN Kalmar in Sweden last year, although I had no idea it was broken despite doctors in Sweden telling me to get x-rays. I just didn’t want to believe it 😂 So, I raced...yup, I did the whole Ironman with a broken shoulder. But, it’s truly the aftermath that I want to discuss. . ✨ After the X-rays and MRI back in the states, life changed. No swim, bike, run for 8 weeks. I could focus on all the things I couldn’t do, OR I could focus on what I could...WALK, and lots of leg strength workouts. (But, I had to be mindful not to overdue it, or I’d end up with ITBand syndrome again or some other kind of tendonitis) So, I did what I could. People ask how do you get through it? I think about how it is an opportunity to focus on other things, try a new hobby, spend time with friends and family, start a side hustle biz. Then, when I was released to start running again, I ran 2 miles on the treadmill at 10min/mile pace and was trashed. I was SO sore the next day. I got Runner’s leg itch, for a few weeks because I hadn’t sweat in a LONG time. It wasn’t easy. And in some ways, I’m still coming back. My arm strength is nowhere near where I’d thought it would be. I still have some left over soft tissue pain if I do too many push ups, and I haven’t swam since last Aug. Start small, be patient, and do what you CAN. 😘 #getregimental Want to prevent injuries? 💥 Fix your squat 💥 _ This video is all about getting a perfect squat but also it will help you a lot with knee pain issues. A very common thing in most of the people is a knee valgus or knees going inward. That’s happening because you have overactive and underactive muscles. Probably your adductors, hips and hamstring is to tight so you have to do Self myofascial release to fix tight knots, but also fix some imbalances. Probable underactive muscles are parts of your glutes and vastus medialis (part of your quad). Thats why we first release the muscles, after that we work every muscle that i mentioned. Also, dorsiflexion (flexion of your ankle) plays a vital part in achieving a perfect squat. If your calf muscles (gastro, soleus, peroneals etc) are too tight, bad ankle mobility gets in place. So try these exercises and you will feel no pain when doing squats. _ #squats

REVERSE DIETING 101:: after the show, you can’t just go back to eating peanut butter out of the jar and chipotle 5 days per week. Weight gain should be strategic and on the slower side since your metabolism is at an all time low while at stage weight. By slowly increasing your carbs and fats, you’re allowing for slow, healthy weight gain while allowing your metabolism to catch up to its new caloric set point. A lot of people get into the trap of reaching the low weight and then getting on a long term “binge” where the weight comes on but the metabolism hasn’t caught up. That being said, even a strict/tight reverse will be accompanied by some weight gain. ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ Bottom line:: maintaining your weight at HIGHER calories is best. "So was it really a fail?" 🤯 @barbell__mel with the #wordsofwisdom 🤗 It's easy to feel defeated, which I did, because I'm kinda.. ok REALLY hard on myself. 6 weeks of work, 18 perfect previous sessions... I wanted to get through the whole cycle without failing, which I know was crazy hard based on testimonials of those who have done it, and I had until this, so that was in my head. It was literally like someone flipped a switch on rep 14 and said "NOPE, legs done." It was so weird. I didn't get the final set of 20 at 240, but it's 8 more than I could do before. This is me being mature (soak it in because it's like a unicorn 🦄 doing burpees, it doesn't happen too often): Whenever you fail, you can learn and find the good. I know why I failed. Three reasons actually. I'm not going to list them because it's just excuses. But, it makes me more confident to retry later this week doing it right 🤤 I'm still excited to retest my max after I give my legs some time to rest, they have not felt 💯 for about two months bc #everydayislegdaywhenyoutearyourlabrum 🤪😂. . 📽️ and narration by @anedin_ 😆
Had the brothers Mikey and @andrew.alfieri in the gym today. As the summer break begins, we start our offseason training. Just gettin in a little upper body session in. Some light eccentric bench press paired with pull ups, some chest fly paired with bench row, inverted row, and dips. Then we finished the day with some tabata push ups. The National Sleep Foundation says that the more sugar you eat during the day, the more often you’re going to wake up in the middle of the night. So do your "tonight-self" a favor and have your "today-self" eat less sugar. That means cutting back on not only the obvious sugar culprits like sodas and sweets, but also the hidden sugars that are in a lot of juices, cereals, sauces, and simple carbs. My own physical training hasn’t been a priority for a good while! Iv still exercised regularly 2/3 times per week but not with any real structure or content. Iv spent a long time trying to set myself up financially so running 3 different businesses has always took priority, iv had the time to train, just not the brain power to focus on it. But thats life, without work and income i wouldn’t have the opportunities for other life experiences. Swings and roundabouts! Dont let it get you down, just keep your eye on the light at the end of the tunnel. Anyway, things have levelled out a little bit, giving me abit more mojo for my own training! This is 120kg, 5kg off my lifetime PB. Yes, its a failed lift, but a test to see where im at. Im pretty confident ill be back in PB territory within a month!
Hack squat. Great way to train quads. Why? If you’re looking primarily at the hip and knee joint and the resultant force vector(in red arrow) you can see that the moment arm is longer, yellow, to the knee and shorter, in blue, to the hip. There’s a greater external force placed on the knee joint. So hack squats are a great way to work the quads, since more internal torque, has to be generated to overcome the external load. Great way to add strength to your shoulder area muscles group is to change the overhead press variations. It’s not always about going heavy, sometimes changing the load or how you are holding your load will change the whole scenario. .
