What is the main cause of obesity?
New YouTube video just went live (link in bio). Me trying to eat an ENTIRE of bread 🍞 + The science behind FITNESS TRACKERS. Definitely worth the watch IMO. P.s. Usual subscriber giveaway applies.
Now let’s have some new content on this (IG) as well. Obesity. Research confirms that currently the cheapest foods are those containing high levels of fat & sugar (Drewnowski & Specter 2004). Thus the way to get the most kcals for the least $ is to eat a diet that is high in fat & sugar. While in isolation these may not be the leading drivers behind recent increases in obesity, together, hyper palatable, kcal dense foods contribute to overeating as they are the cheapest & most accessible foods available these days (Cawley 2004). Also, although kcal intake has increased levels of activity have stayed stable (if not less) than previous yrs (Harper & Lynch 1990, Gordon-Larsen et al 2006) meaning that extra kcal consumption is not compensated for through increases in activity. Results (as seen in the pic) have thus been an increase of obesity rates from ~15% to as high as 44.7% in some areas from 1980-2018 (Mitchell et al 2011).
Recap: In the 21stC people move less & eat more which to some respect would be ok if the foods/portions provided were regulated for kcals but this brings me onto the next point. THEY ARENT.
According to Young et al (2002) portion size began to grow in the 1970s rose quickly in the 1980s & have continued in alongside increasing bodyweight. Because kcal content increases with portion size it makes perfect sense why obesity rates continue to rise as larger portions not only contain more kcal but also encourage people to eat more (Rolls et al 200). The result is thus cheap, kcal dense foods served in portions large enough to feed a family yet alone a young child/teen or even grown adult.
Conclusion: Obesity is a huge problem worldwide & needs to be addressed however as much as you may want to blame sugar, fat, carbs, insulin etc. The main reason you are gaining weight is due to being exposed to an environment that now promotes excessive CALORIE intake & sedentary beh
